my" 20-- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, Septemb 19, 1995 Ve Hang on to your hat! Here comes the rodeo by Heather McCrae The days of the wild west are coming to Clarington this weekend. For the secong congecutive year the provincial redeo championships are being 'held at'the Durham Central Agricultural Society Fairgrounds in Orono. Spectators will enjoy the thrills and spills of roundup as top contestants compete "in the Championship Finals. One man who's been actively involved in rodeo most of his life is Gary Doner of Sunderland. Thirty seconds is allowed and the fastest time determines the winner. Gary and one of his partners, Rick Cook: of Leaskdale, have done team , roping skillfully within seven seconds and are currently placing third in the province as they head into the finals this weekend. Another event he used to enter was gaddle bron riding but after tompeting in the 1992 finals he gave it up. Self employed in his own roofing business, he feels he doesn't need an injury to curtail his trade. "Team roping isn't quite as physically demanding -and there's probably less incidence of injury" the forty year old told the Citizen in an interview last week. Like father, like son, his young son, Raymond, is involved, in rodeo too. Weighing 60 pounds, Raymond's been competing in the Mutton Bustin' event for three years now, Riding on the backs of sheep weighing more than double his weight, at the tender age of 8 years, Raymond already has a DURHAM 4-H SWINE CLUB would like to thank the following businesses for purchasing a pig at the 4-H Swine Club Auction at the Blackstock Fair on Saturday, August 26th. His mother, Elma, has also team roped A few times but now ». enjoys going to the rodeo cheering for her son and husband. Gary's younger brother, Kenny, has also made it to the finals in team roping, too. A farrier from Orillia, he's also competed in saddle bronc riding and bull riding. The Doner name is synonymous to rodeo. While their father is one of the founding members of the Ontario Rodeo Association he was also the All-Round Rodeo €hampion for quite a few years. His wife was involved too, entertaining audiences with her tricks and vaults on horseback. Another brother of Gary's is an All-Round Saddle Bronce Riding Champion. Living in Janetville, Brian Doner has won more trophies'than anyone else.in rodeo. Two other brothers, Wayne and David, have been actively involved in rodeo too, with the Jatter currently placing third in bull riding this weekend. While Gary has broken a leg and am from saddle bronc riding, Kenny's memory of a. bucking horse falling on him is a steel pin in his leg. But, still they go back into the rodeo ring. "We like it" they both told the Citizen and enjoy meeting different people in the sport throughout the province and the Us. Ken says the worst part is the driving. "Three years ago I drove 100,000 miles to compete in 80 rodeos" he said. Right after the rodeo this weekend he's heading to Richmond, VA to compete in a three-day event. The ORA animals, they say, are given the utmost care. Strict rules are designed to prevent cruelty or even unintentional mistreatment. $ Other events contested at the provincials this weekend are bareback bronc riding, steer wrestling, junior ste@r riding, cowgirl breakaway,|cowgirl barrel racing, saddle bronc riding, calf roping apd the popular bullriding. \ The rodeo isn't thet only attraction during the weckend. There'll be plenty of western style vendors and a couple of dances, featuring the bands, One Horse Blue and Chaser. For more info call 1-800-861- 0418.
