Fair Board and | Scugog council agree on lease for fairgrounds Scugog Township cdunéil and the Port Perry Fair Boaxd have reached agreement on terms of & new lease for the fairgrounds. Fair board chairman Paul Christie told council Monday afternoon the board has accepted the terms of a new lease, which has been a contentious issue between the two sides for the last éouple of years. ! "We are looking forward to working with' the Township council," said Mr. Christie after a brief appearance at Monday's meeting. The Fair Board's current lease with the Township for the 22 acre fairgrounds in northwest Port Perry expires in July 1997. The new lease which takes effect October 1 this year, runs for five years to September 30, 2000. The new lease may be extended after two years for a further two years. And at every two year interval, it may be extended for another two years. Essentially this compromise allows the Township a two year "escape clause," which had been at the centre of contention between the Board and some members of council. Thé Fair Board initially had sought a ten year lease with no "escape clause" for the Township. The clause stating the duration and renewal of the new lease states that "renewal shall not be unreasonably withheld." Mr. Christie said acceptanee of this new lease was by no means unanimous among directors of the Fair Board: However, it Pp a needed compromise. The new lease was hailéd by members of council. Ward 4 rep Karen Puckrin said "both sides should be thanked," and Ward 1 rep Doug Moffatt said the lease shows "trust on both sides. We can move forward on a positive note. Both sides can now go to work to try to improve the Fair" One clause in the new lease states that if "for the betterment of the community, it is advisable for the property to be sold, it is on the understanding that the council of the day will financially assist in relocation of the fairgrounds to a mutually agreed upon facility." And it states that if a Fair is not held on the grounds for two consecutive years, the lease may not be renewed. { Police hired to slow down truck A company building new homes in Victorian Village in Port Perry has promised to hire an 'off-duty police officer in an effort to get truckers to slow down on Ash Street in Port Perry.
