Sign shop zoning bid may get a rough ride Township council will decide in the next couple of weeks whether to agree to a re-zoning for Scugog Signs at 4299 Highway 7A, east of Nestleton. And if the comments from several councillors Monday afternoon"are any indication, the re- zoning /is in serious trouble. Ward 1 rep Doug Moffatt angrily lectured applicant Maria Mammone about the lack of preparation, on the application. And he pointed to an October 20 letter from the Ministry of the Environment which says "Scugog Signs is not in eompliance with Section 9 of the Environment Protection act. A zoning contravention is considered to have occurred," says the letter signed senior environmental officer R. T. Lyon. "The MOE is 'telling me there is a serious problem here--that this (the re-zoning) should not go ahead," said councillor Moffatt. Mrs. Mammone and her husband own the Jand and a building where Scugog Signs émploys seven people manufacturing traffic signs. The building formerly was used as a pottery plant more than a decade ago. The re- zoning is required to conform to the use as a sign manufacturing site. The owner of Scugog Signs, Ron Haslan, has i $ told council in the past that he can't afford to re-locate his business to an industrial park and if the re-zoning is not approved he will be forced to shut down throwing several people out of work. Regional rep Marilyn Pearce said council first asked for a proper site plan a year ago and council is still waiting for it. "I don't feel you have given us what we (council) asked for," she told the applicant. Scugog Mayor Howard Hall said the issue will be decided at the next council meeting. "I would hope we will get this settled once and for all. It has gone on far too long," said the Mayor.
