Since joining when she was 12, she's also. been involved in most other 4-H clubs Durham East has to offer, with the exception of the Beef Club. Now, 20, next year being her final one, she's considering joining this program. "I want to learn more about the breed. When I was a member of the sheep and swine clubs I learned a lot" she said. Presently in her second year of a 4-Year Animal Science Program at the University of Guelph, the Blackstock woman says she's learned a great deal through 4-H and says it will be applicable in the future working with the animals. At the Durham East 4-H Awards Night on October 28 Carolyn was the recipient of a $600 scholarship from the Durham Dairy Producers, formerly known as the Durham Milk Committee and also won the trophy for being Champion Dairy Showman at the Orono Fair. In the summer Carolyn was one of five Canadians who had won a 4-H trip to the UK, sponsored by the Weston Foundation. The only member from Ontario, the rest were from British Columbia, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. During her visit to England she stayed with Young Farmer's families. Young Farmer's in the UK is a program similar to 4- H Just ask Carolyn about the trip and her eyes immediately light up. While staying with a family in Wales she got the chance to go on calls with the local country vet and did a lot of hiking. And she did other fun things too, like riding the world's largest roller coaster in Blackpool. But the highlight of the trip was when she attended the Royal Highland Show in Scotland and witnessed a former cow of theirs, Altona Lea Broker Emma, become the Top Junior Champion. When she introduced herself to the new owner he and his family all hugged her, delighted she was there to witness the event. Arriving home on July 26, two nights before her parents hosted the Durham County Twilight Meeting, she says about the trip, "it was the most eye opening experience. Farming's a lot different there and it's given me a broader way of thinking." "4-H has been the biggest outside interest in my life and has provided me with 80 many opportunities.
