healthstyles deb mcdonald Picking up the phone to order a pi¥a on the weekend is a common ogcurrence in many heuseholds. Pizza is a fun food! Few other foods match pizza's combination of convenience and hutrition. It can be delivered within a half an hour in many circumstances. Since pizza has the potential of covering all the major food groups, it must be good for you. The crust counts as part of the grains or starch group; milk or dairy is provided substantially in the mozzarella cheese topping; the meat or alternative protein group is adequately accounted for in the pepperoni, ham, bacon or shrimp, and last but not least, the abundance of vegetable toppings and the tomato sauce and éven fruit such as pineapble, are well represented: ] The real shock comes when you add up the fat in this wonderful creation! For example, one slice of Pizza Hut's Supreme (medium pan size) pizza accounts for approximately 16 grams of fat, Don't get me wrong. I am not suggesting to ban this food from your weekly treat repertoire. But perhaps be a bit more aware of the control which you can gxercise in producing a more "nutritionally-fit" pizza! A typical pepperoni pizza can derive 45% or more of its calories from fat. By sidestepping the megt aldne you can cut the fat almost in half and still be left with enough protein (also in the cheese). There, "are other alternatives in making your pizza nutritionally better when it comes to the crust, the more, the better. Pizza dough provides much in carbohydrates and little fat. So a thicker or 'deep-dish' crust, would be preferable over a thin type. A whole-wheat crust would also offer greater fibre content... When making your own pizza, be creative. Experiment with bageld, English muffins, pita bread or other flat breads, , You may want to be a bit more conservative with the mozzarella cheese or use a lower fat variety, as a pizza topping. Even though mozzarella is a good source of calcium, high quality protein and some vitamins, it can also be about 70% fat in content. | Plain tomato sauce is usually lower in fat than pizza sauce, which may contain oil and flavour additives. You can add spices such as oregano, garlic or basil to your tomato sauce to zip it up. One of the main strengths of pizza is that it can accommodate many flavours. Order more vegetable toppings on your pizza or expand your homemade horizons using asparagus, cauliflower, broccoli, eggplant, chives i and the list goes on. How you can Investigate THE BAHA'I FAITH!
