Mary Lou Carnochan became the fourth woman to join after being reeognized for working 25 years at the bank. vo Mary Lou has lived most of her life in Port Perry and for almost half of those years has worked at the Royal Bank. After graduating from PPHS, she went to work at GM but was one of 500 salaried employees laid off on February 28, 1967, "Black Tuesday". That week 'Mary Lou applied at the Royal Bank, then located where the Children's Den is now. "The manager, Al Pacey, was a bit hesitant about hiring me" Mary Lou said. "I guess he thought I wouldn't stay because of the cut in pay (after working at GM) - but I'm still here!" Hired as a stenographer on March 13, 1967, those were the days of the manual typewriter. Cleriesl work was done by hand and banking hours were the traditional "ten to three". Taking a leave after having two daughters, Lesley and Joy, she returned part-time to the bank in 1973 and has been there since. A lot of those years she worked one day a week at the Blackstock sub-branch. "I always looked forward to those days in Blackstock" she reminisced with the Citizen. "Customers would always come in with treats and there was always time for a chat, too". Always supportive of his wife working, George babysat their daughters when Mary Lou worked in Blackstock. For the past several years Mary Lou has been a regular part-time employee as an Assistant Service Representative. On November 7 the Royal Bank presented her with a diafnond studded #gold watch and pendant. That night present and former staff attended a dinner party hosted by fellow employee Sandra Thorne where Mary Lou was "royally" roasted, then presented with a gold chain and bracelet and a pieck of pewter jewellery. Joan Beare, Jayne Parry, Martha Volman, and now, Mary Lou, are the members of the Royal Bank's "Golden Girls Club". Health Unit ponders anti measles vaccine Nearly 100,000 students in Durham Region may be getting a two-dose measles vaccine next year if the provincial government approves the funding. "The Health Department will be prepared to provide measle vaccine to 99,000 school-age children from Kindergarten to grade 13, said Dr. Linda Panaro, the Region's medical officer of health. The measles immunization program was one of several recommended last week by Ontario Medical Health Officer Richard Schapas. He also is suggesting a wider hepatitis B coverage and better protection against influenza with a vaccine for everyone over 65 years of. age and younger people suffering from chronic illness such as heart disease, diabetes or kidney failure. Director of Education accepts new position Durham Board of Education Director Phuline Laing will accept a secondment to the Ministry of Education and Training to head work in curriculum effective January 1, 1996, Laing, who has been Director of the Durham Board for the past seven years, returns to a long standing area of interest in the new position: prior to coming to Durham, she was the Superi & from the early grades to secondary school graduation. She will ensure classroom materidls keep pace with the changing needs of students and teachers by - promoting the use of information technology to facilitate the development and province-wide sharing of these resources. She will work closely with teachers, parents, faculties of education, y educational Curriculum Services for the Halton Board of Eduction. + Laing will be responsible for assuring a challenging and relevant provincial curriculum and high standards for students institutions, business, labour and the broader community to ensure the quality and relevance of provincial curriculum. "I am excited about the challenge of this new position," states Laing.
