The 170 communities that will lose regular bus service if de- regulation goes ahead were identified by drivers working in' the bus industry. Along with Port Perry, others in the Scugog area include Greenbank and Sunderland on Highway 12. The Ontario Coalition of Seniors, the Federation of Students and the three unions have joined forces in "Freedom to Move" charging that loss of bus service in these small communities will create' thardship for seniors and students who need this kind of transportation. "Ontario minister of transportation Al Palladini is taking away the freedom to move of thousands of seniors across Ontario," said Mario Alloi of the Seniors Coalition which represents 500,000 small" seniors in 80 organizations. Under current regulations, the Highway Transport Board balances the bus companies need r profits with community need for services. There are no subsidies } from the government to provide bus services. Instead, companies earn the right to run momey- making routes on public roads by providing regular scheduled service in areas which would be without service were it not for the regulations. The total cost of the Highway Transport Board each year is $450,000. "The Fréedom to Move" coalition is urging seniors and students and anyone else who uses bus service to contact their MPPs and demand that the provincial government drop its plans to de- regulate the bus industry next April.
