Christmas Seals hope to raise $100,000 The Lung Association has just mailed the 1995 Christmas Seals to some 3.5 million homes in Ontario, including 115,000 homes here in Durham Region. This year's campaign aims to raise $4.5 million province- wide, and $100,000 of it in Durham, for programs to combat asthma, emphysema, lung cancer, - and other forms of lung disease. ~ The 1995 Seal, which depicts a teddy bear on snowshoes making his way through snow covered evergreens on a sunny day, was designed by Maria- Aline Oliver of Ottawa. Ninety-one years ago, in 1904, Christmas Seals first appeared on letters and parcels as a way to raise money to over, fight tuberculosis (TB) and this campaign theme continues, providing the largest source of funds for fighting lung disease. One in five Canadians has some sort of breathing problem. Every twenty 'minutes each day another Canadian dies from some form of respiratory disease. It's shocking to know that every single month in Ontario, 1,100 people die" from smoking- related causes. Lung disease is Canada's third largest, killer. Today we must work together to fight new strains of TB as well as find cures for all lung disease. Donations to this important campaign are used to support educational programs for adults and children right here in our community who are suffering fromJdung disease. The proceeds are also used to fund much-needed medical research in Ontario medical centres. Christmas Seals work year round to give life and breath to millions of Canadians so look in your mail this week for The Lung Association envelope of Seals, use them on your mail and puta donation in the mail to The Lung 'Association. You can call The Lung Association's. Durham office at (905) 436-1046 for further information * on lung disease and programs or to.make a donation. Every dollar you can give will help...When You Can't , Breath, Nothing Else", Matters! 2,
