[EDITORIAL Don't let this project slip by A fair amount of ink has been recently in the local press over the Lishman proposal on a chunk of land on the north side of Highway 7A just west of Nestleton® It's a big proposal, calling for a facility to manufacture fur clothing, a film studio, a facility to assemble ultra-light aircraft and an interpretive centre. It's an important proposal for Scugog Township in terms of jobs and assessment. Scugog council two weeks unanimously gave the project approval in principle providing the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Ag and Food approves, that it be subject to site plan approval by the local touncil ahd thet ultra light flights be restricted to the owner. In public correspondence, Bill Liban has made it clear that if this proposal 'gets scuttled in Scugog, it will go elsewhere. And make no mistake, there are plenty of municipalities that would go to the wall to entice this kind of development inside their borders. Ultimately, it will be the Ministry of the Environment that says yes or no to this project, based on water and sewer servicing. Scugog council was right to approve in principle. It would be a shame to see this ambitious project leave our Township, providing that all conditions can be met in reasonable fashion. Scugog"needs the jobs, the assessment and to send a message that business opportunities are welcome here, especially for a business that is already a local success story. Why the rush? Just what exactly is Mike Harris up to at Qisons Park. No, we are not talking about the un-precedented spgnding cuts announced last week. We know what those are. i What we are talking about is a new piece of legislation called the Savings and Restructuring Bill (nothing too threatening about the name, anyway) introduced last week ~ BILL! oN THE TWELFTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS IKE AND THE GANG GAVE TO THEMSELVES... -FOWER TO ALLOCATE, DOCTORS Fees... - MERGE TOWNS AND ATIES... - ALTER COMMUNITY BOUNDARIES... -GHUT DOWN HOSPITALS... -ReGULATE DRUG PRICES... -DAM OUR RIVERS... ~SLAVGHTER OUR FORESTS... - MORE PROFIT FOR THAR FRIENDS... - PRIVATIZE 'PUBLIC FIRMS... . -5u)ELPING (GOURRNMENT CONTROL... " - CREATE LAWS IN SECRECY... ! ; ALL WRAPPED UP IN THE SAVINGS A RESTRUCTURING oy LETTERS To THE EDITOR Ontario labour fights back To the Editor: I would like to respond to the letter by Harold Reid 'on November 28th, 1995. Obviously this man is not reading or listening to what is really going on in the Province of Ontario. I will agree that a majority of people voted in Mike Harris (that does not include me), but this man has done nothing but break every promise he made. He has cut health care, made seniors have a users fee for drugs that are necessary'to keep them healthy, taken away health and safety in the workplace, removed our minimum wage, amid all the fanfare and hullabaloo of the "cuts. And the Conservatives have served notice they want this Bill through the Legislature by December 14, without public hearings.' If approved, it will give the provincial government the right to alter some 46 pieces of legislation--the power to close or merge hospitals, tell physicians where to practise medicine, reduce citizen rights to access to information, cut pay-equity amounts and force municipalities to merge with other mpnicipalities. 'Why do the Ontario Conservatives feel they need these sweeping powers at this time, and in such haste. And why is this Bill being pushed through without the opportunity for the, Opposition parties to review it thoroughly, and give it the public airing it deserves. Why does the Conservative government think it suddenly and quickly needs to put so much power in the hands of Cabinet ministers--power, which, if exercised, could dramatically alter the face of this province as we now know it? In short, what's the rush and why? A decision to cut public spending on a massive and un- precedented scale in Ontario is one thing. Time will tell if they have the desired affect in righting the economic wrongs in Ontario. : But this Bill is something else again. Such a transfer of power needs to be debated thoroughly and openly. This just can't be done in two weeks time, especially when MPPs are still grappling with the impacts of the spending cuts. duced our Ministry of Labour, cut welfare system as if they don't suffer enough already. And where is our 30% reduction? This list goes on and on. Harold Reid, you obviously were not part of the demonstration! with the OFL. I was. It was a very peaceful protest. There was no violence of any kind. There were 4800 union people standing up for the rights of you my "brother". We should stand up and applaud these people for fighting bac! Mike ans has proven he is not for the average people of Ontario; it is very clear by the cuts he has made. He has not touched anyone but the middle class, poor, seniors and the sick. Get the big guys for a change Mike. Attack the corporate world and leave us little people alone, (but we know where his 'campaign money comes from). As far as your statement about paying Jesse Jackson thousands of your union dollars and not using good Canadian speakers, once again you don't know what you're talking about. People don't always need tq be paid to speak on something they believe in, they find it a privilege to speak to others who believe that people have a right to, work in a safe place, have decent wages and health care. We had many guest Canadian speakers at the OFL such as Bob White president of the CLC and the new leader of the NDP, and many more. You say it took many sacrifices for unions to be recognized the way they are today and you are correct. But Mike Harris with the swipe of a pen took away everything that the unions fought for. That is why we have to fight back on December 11. We have | to let him know that the hard working people of Ontario want ,. stand behind 5 December 11 with all of our back what we sacrificed so much for. Remember one thing thé union has always been there for the workirig people. They have fought for our rights. That is what they stand for. The conservative government has not stood behind us they have fought us every inch of the way. So, people of Ontario, let's the OFL on support and fight back, tell Mike 'Harris we are taking our rights back. Remember what the union has given you and what Mike Harris has taken away and the" answer should be clear where we should be on December 11. "London is calling". In Solidarity Dorothy Algar . Port Perry That school bus To The Editor: In last week's Citizen, school bus driver Bherry Chambers made a comparison on two different sitbations' 1 was parked in a proper space, not in a parking lot. This careless driver backed a school bus up a hill onto a main street, an illegal act. Hitting a parked car and leaving the scene, an illegal act. You call this a bad rap against this driver? 1 haverno knowledge of dep being picked up at the IGA at 3pm or the Canadian Tire Plaza at 10:45 am. On Monday Nov. 27th, six ° school buses were parked in one local parking lot. A lot of children doing their X-Mas shopping I guess! It only takes a few bad apples to spoil a barrel full.
