wp 14 -- Scugog Citizen - Tuesday, December 19, 1995 'Letter to the Editor Grandaughter asks for understanding bry us all To The Editor: Could you imagine being in a house fire that severely burnt some part of your body? And even worse, knowing you suffered your injuries at the hands of a man, your friend and lover of fourteen years? Well, for one woman who has just recently joined our community, it's a reality. 'Who is this woman; she's my grandmother. For the past 2 1/2 months this 68 year-old woman has gone through hell. In a drunken rage, her live-in lover first threatened my mother, sisters and 'then five month old nephew as well as my grandma. He then tried to physically beat my mom and grandma with a pipewrench with, my twin sister being the only one ve could restrain him. ith my father two hours away, when he heard of this he called the police: When the police arrived he acted as if nothing happened. They took reports and advised my mother and sisters to leave right away with the baby for their own safety. In knowing that my uncle, who had just arrived, would be staying with grandma, mom felt that it would be safe to leave. Later that Labour Day evening we got a phone call from Bracebridge. It was Grandma. Her boyfriend, again in a rage, was threatening her and my uncle. My dad told him over the phone that dad called the police not grandma. He then made some threats and hung up the phone. He then went downstairs in a bedroom where he had a lugar already loaded. They heard a shot and went downstairs. When they got down there the struggle began. My uncle who had bad legs and heart trouble got the gun away from him and threw it in the woods. While my uncle was outside, this man grabbed So, what was going on last week at Community Hospital when dietician John Hood, diabetes educator Sandy McCully and volunteer Kent Farndale got 'dressed up like this? It was all part of a skit during an education clinic for diabetics. Aside from a few laughs (like during this skit) the clinic focussed on nutrition, the causes of diabetes and how this disease can be successfully treated. The Corporation of the Township of Scugog 'NOTICE' a gas tank and poured gas everywhere then waited to hear my uncle call for grandma. When he did, he waved goodbye to grandma and lit the gas. Thank god my uncle was there that night, otherwise, she may not be with us today. After rushing her to the local hospital, they told my uncle she would have to be transferred to Wellsley Hospital's Burn Unit. She had received second and third degree burns from her knees down. Because of her age and that she had diabetes, these burns would be more painful for her and take longer to heal. For the first two weeks of her hospitalization, our family was not given any guarantees. However, the scariest and most upsetting day for us was after her first skin graph. When they brought her back to her room, she was begging us to let her go. She said my grandfather was at the end of her bed with his hands reaching for her. She said that at least with him, she knew she was loved and safe. She said with him, no one would ever hurt her again. No one can realize the trauma this woman has been through. In fact, I didn't realize the mental damage she had suffered until the day she woke up after about a five minute nap, shaking and crying, telling me that her lover was behind me and begging me to get him out of her room. She then cried and asked me what she FRR FAMILY ester 15300 Hwy. 12 - Port Perry 985-7593 estern Spurz ever did in her lifetime to deserve this from a man she devoted the last fourteen years of her life to. My answer: I didn't have one. Before this incident, my grandmother was a very strong, caring, full of life woman who would give a complete stranger the shirt off her back. This woman worked very hard all of her life. She was working in a restaurant at night, going to school to become a nurse and still had time for her husband and two small children. In fact, my mother and uncle said that it was not unusual for them to come home and find a stranger in their bed. It was usually a teenager who had no where to go, and my grandparents, without a second thought, brought them into their home. And now, a woman who has worked so hard all of her life, is suffering in every way possible. This woman is not only suffering physically and mentally. She has lost everything. Her clothing, her furniture, her car, a place she called home and a relationship. These things do not bother her as much as the memories she has saved over the years like her marriage certificate, her first engagement ring she got from my grand-dad and the locks of hair she had saved from her children and grandchildren. Saddest of all, she has lost her trust in people and her independence. The one question that is on my mind is where is the justice for her? Yes, he is being brought up on criminal charges, but exactly how much closure is that going to bring her...as no amount of jail time will bring her back her belongings. "The insurafice companies willl not release any type of funds because she wag living with the man who set the fire. We have asked for help from different organizations only to be told that they help organizations and not individuals. In fact the only two that have offered any type of assistance has been the Oddfellows and 'Kotya Peekin' and to those people, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. With the Christmas season approaching, we would like to show her a new beginning in a new community. We would 4 like to show her the kind of hospitality and compassion this community possesses. Anyone who can, in anyway help her, please contact us. Sincerely Yours, Kelly McPherson Port Perry, Ont.
