Already a millionaire by the time he was twenty-one, he turned down several lucrative career opportunities following his graduation from Yale. Around this time, two more words appeared in the back of his Bible, "No Retreats." Still convinced that he was to invest his life in mission work, Borden entered Princeton Theological Seminary to prepare for the ministry. Graduating from Princeton, Borden enlisted in a mission society working in China. Borden set sail for China in 1912, stopping over in Egypt for a period of further studies where he contracted cerebral meningitis and died within a month. It would be easy to describe William Borden's short life as a tragic waste, since he turned his back on several "significant business opportunities in his home country. Why would a young man of such promise believe he could make an impact as a mission worker in a far- away country with customs and culture radically different from his? However, William Borden did not feal this way at all, for underneath the words, "No Reserves" and "No Retreats," he had penned two more. words, "No Regrets." Jesus Christ once said, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God" (Luke 9:62 NIV). Placing William Borden's short life next to these words indicates he lived an eremplary life, a life that pleased the God he served. Sensing God's call on his life, William Borden committed himself to follow with every ounce of strength he possessed. He refused to be distracted by the allurements of the so-called good life. Though his life was cut short, he had lived, the life God gave him with dignity and commitment in a.cause greater than his own advancement. As 19956 fades into history and 1996 looms > large before us, let's take a moment to assess our goals and aspirations. Can our lives be described with these six words: "No Reserves", "No Retreats" and "No Regrets?" Our world desperately needs women, men and youth with the moral strength of a William Borden. Shunning the comfortable life of financial success, he sought to minister to the hurting, the disillusioned, the confused, the teeming millions who seek meaning and purpose in this life. As someone once observed, "What counts is not how long you live but how well you live." Major losses tend to have an accumulative effect. In your case, the grief process is complex and its intensity is multiplied. The counselor's job is to help you explore your feelings, to understand them and to encour- age you to take responsibility to complete your healing process. The problem usually lies with the patient's expectations rather than with the counselor's inability to help, but the latter must also be considered. *Questions from bereavement classes are answered here by the editor of AfterLoss, the monthly grief-recovery help letter.
