- v mmm" Scugog Citizen -- Wednesday, January 3, 1996 --15 <a MoJacks grind out busy Christmas schedule by John B. McClelland While most people were enjoying a few days break ffom work between Christmas and New Years, that was not the case for the Port Perry MoJacks. The MoJacks had more hockey on their plate than plum pudding with four games in as many nights starting December 27 when they hosted Picton at the Scugog Arena and ending December 30 when the Lakefield Chiefs paid a visit. It was a brutal schedule at a time of year when most people just want to put their feet up and relax for a few days and head coach Chic Carnegie daid he was pleased the team at least came out of the four games with a split of two wins and two losses. In game one against Picton MoJacks got a goal in overtime from defenseman Scott Heasman to get a 3-2 victory. Cory Bricknell and ModJack reps named 10 the 1996 Junior All Star game are Keith Leslle, Todd NOY Dennis and defenseman Scott Heasman. Also golale Paul Roberts not in photo. The game was played New Years Day In Little Britain against the Merchants and the Stars skated to a 6-3 victory. Roberts was named third star for his work In this match. » ji Sno-pitch coming soon Well it's that time of year again to show off your amazing skills and exquisite form and hopefully have a good time at the Andy Avis Memorial Sno-Pitch Tournament, February 10. Teams from Ajax, Lindsay, Frontennac, Georgina, Gravenhurst, St. Catharines, Port and the eventual winners Trenton were all quite evenly matched as all the scores of the day were quite close with most games only having a one goal difference. The Islanders first game of the day was against the Georgina Ice and the Islanders came out on the short end of this one by a 3- 2 count. Not all the players seemed to be interested in winning this game as a few looked like they were out for a leisurely skate rather than trying to win a hockey game. As we all know it takes a concerted effort by the whole team to win and then this whole team decides to play they can be a very good team. The Islanders would like to thank Ritchie Lefort for all his efforts in once again running a successful tournament and a special thanks to Linda Parry for her hard work organizing the rest of the parents to take care of the gate and Nevada draw. teams with their playing times. BD Steve Barkwell netted the other goals for the MoJacks. The next night in Picton, MolJacks were shut out for the first time this season as they went down to a 3-0 defeat in an inter-locking match. And last Friday night in Sutton, MoJacks continued to have trouble putting the puck in the net as they lost 2-1 to the Ice with Barkwell managing the lone tally. The team got back in the win column Sunday night (Dec. 30) at the Scugog Arena as they popped four goals in the middle period en route to a 4-2 victory over Lakefield Chiefs. After spotting Chiefs a 1- 0, first period lead, MoJacks tied things at 1:12 of the second and by the 12 minute mark were ahead 4-1. Barkwell got them going with a hard slap shot that got through the pads of netminder Colin Caley. Leading sniper in the league Keith Leslie made it 2-1 on the power play at 9:42 with a shot through traffic and a minute later newcomer Derek Anderson flipped home a back-hand to give MoJacks a 34 lead. Barkwell got his second of the night at 12:02 when he took a pass from Heasman, scampered down the left side and beat Caley cleanly with a hard slap shot from about 30 feet out. Chiefs tried to make the game interesting in the final few minutes of te third period when Longfield made it 4-2 but that was as close at they ot. If they hand out medals for this Kind of thing, netminder Rick Hutchinson deserved a gold one for completing the game despite a nasty flu bug. Counterpart Paul Roberts was away on personal family matters and coach Carnegie had little choice but to keep Hutch in the game even though he was visibly wobbly, especially in the third period. This was a chippy game in places with players on both sides in less then a festive mood. MoJacks started their gruelling schedule back on December 22 when they dumped league leading Uxbridge Bruins by a 5-2 count in Uxbridge. Cory Bricknell showed some offensive flair as he netted a pair for the MoJacks with singles to Heasman, Leslie and Kenton LeFort. SLAPSHOTS: MoJacks now have 41points, good enough for sedond place in the Central League standings, six back of the Bruins who defeated Little Britain twice and Bobcaygeon once to maintain their hold on first. The Central League held its-annual all star game on New Year's Day in Little Britain with the Stars doubling the* Merchants 6- 3 in a well played match that featured just about everything. The Merchants had the honour of playing the Stars because they were in first place in the standings as of November 15. MoJacks sent netminder Paul Roberts, forwards Keith Leslie and Todd Dennis and defenseman Scott Heasman as their reps. Roberts was voted third star in the game and Heasman and Leslie helped the Stars cause with an assist each. . MoJacks will have a few days to relax after the brutal schedule over Christmas and New Years. Next game for the green and white is this coming Sunday (Jan. 7) when they host first place Uxbridge in one of those proverbial "four pointers." Faceoff is 7:00 PM at Scugog Arena.
