And it's quite the logo, showing a hound in baseball uniform, cap, spikes taking a determined swat at the old The logo came from the talented pen of Jenna Todd, a grade ten student at Port Perry High School. Her design was selected by players from by Hounds unanimously numerous logos submitted. Just before Christmas, Hound team reps Rob Smith and Zolton Domik presented Jenna with $50 for her efforts in designing the logo that will emblazone their jerseys. "We (team members) wanted to get the (high) school"involved in the design of the logo. We felt we could get lots of good input from the students as this school has so much talent to offer the community," explained Zolton. "It's an opportunity for the students to show the community what kind of N BOXING WEEK continues ... NO pavmenTts NO INTEREST work they are able to do,' said Rob. Art teacher Lane Prentice said he was delighted when the team approached him to ask about+his class coming up with a new logo. "It's meaningful for the students to take on a project such as this, It becomes more than just a routine class assignment," he said. Jenna worked two to three weeks on the design--much of it done free-hand=-and she was pleased when she learned her logo had been selected by the Hounds slo-pitch team. She said eventually she would like to = work professionally in the arts field, though not necessarily in graphics. The Hounds will play in the highly competitive A Division of the Scugog Mens Slo Pitch League; and will enter several tournaments over the summer .months, said Zolton. Their jerseys will be white, the "hounds" lettering in red and the Hound himself in bright blue. MNR staff will monitor deer feeding areas in Ontario Recent heavy snowfalls across Ontario's deer range have severely hampered deer movement between their food RIDE still going strong in Region During the fourth week of the Durham Police RIDE program, officers stopped just over 3600 vehicles and issued four 12 hour temporary suspensions and made one arrest for driving with over the legal limit of 80 milligrams. Acting Sgt, John Givelas said enforcement in the fourth week of operation (up to an including Jan. 1) was hampered somewhat by poor road conditions and bad weather in the Region. To date, 27,260 drivers have been stopped in the RIDE program and Police have administered 128 roadside 'breath tests resulting in 36 temporary suspensions and nine charges of drinking and driving. During the past week, regular Durham Police road patrals arrested and charged 12 persons with impaired driving. The RIDE program last week was operational.in Oshawa, Bowmanville, Pickering, Port Perry and the Ajax area. The program will continue to operate full time in Durham through the month of January. supplies and shelter areas. This condition normally starts when "snow depths reach 50 or mope centimetres, but in the Muskoka and Sault Ste. Marie areas, more than 100 centimetres of snow fell between December 9 and 10. "We are very concerned about how these heavy snowfalls might be affecting deer," said Natural Resources Minister Chris Hodgson. "MNR field staff across Ontario have been carefully monitoring the situation through weekly checks of snow depths and snow crusts." At key snow stations set up by the ministry, wind chill and snow compaction are also being measured to estimate Winter « Severity Index (WSI) levels. The WSI allows resource managers to predict the potential impact the winter will have on deer survival so they can determine if and when emergency feeding should be conducted. areas, or yards, as they are often called, trail breaking by snow shoeing or with snow machines has begun. Carefully placed trails will allow much freer movement by deer between their daily food and shelter areas. This activity will also help to establish a trdil network to facilitate the distribution of emergency foods if required. Many groups and individuals across the province have met with ministry field staff to discuss how they can help deer this winter. If the current rate of snowfalls continue in Ontario's central deer range, an emergency state could be reached by ear.y February. At that time, MNR will work with local clubs and groups such as the Wildlife Winter Feeding Program Inc., a Muskoka-based organization run by Jack Newton, to implement an emergency feeding program. : ... for the first 120 days of 1996 on 1992 to 1995 PRE-OWNED In several wintering USED CARS & TRUCKS.
