See story. Cate Friesen in Greenbank Cate Friesen will be at the Greenbank Community Hall on January 13. "Equal parts story-teller and social chronicler, Friesen is best served by her mellifluous voice -- a bright crisp instrument." Cate is rooted in folk but as vocalist, musician and songwriter she brings a rich diversity to her music. Her songwriting has invoked a variety of comparisons, including Connie Kdldor and Jane Siberry. Her live performances are characterized by her dynamic energy, the humour and stories she weaves between songs creating a ~ strong connection with her audience. "It is Friesen's authenticity that allows «her to connect with her audience so readily." (Quota Magazine) Raised on a farm near Altona, Manitoba, Cate left the Prairies to travel the world, ending up in Toronto, where she currently resides. Her music smoothly meshes the influences of her Prairie roots with the creative inspiration of contemporary urban cultural life. Last year Cate released her second independent recording Tightrope Waltz on her own label wide-eyed music. (distributed by Festival Records) Produced by John Switzer it features rich and varied instrumental arrangements, while still capturing the intimacy characteristic of Cate's live performance. Her songs have received extensive airplay on CBC and alternative/college radio. Since this release Cate has toured the Western Provinces and Ontario. This past summer she performed at numerous festivals including Winnipeg Folk Festival, Calgary Folk Festival and Summerfolk (Owen Sound).. Production for Cate's next release will begin in March and is slated for a June '96 release. She will be showcasing at the North American Folk Alliance in February followed by a Canadian Eastern tour with her band (supported by Canada Council). Cate is equally comfortable in a theatre, on an outdoor stage or in an intimate workshop. She performs solo, as a duo or with her band. Her band brings together some of Toronto's most gifted musical a " After some two months of extensive renovations, Port Petry newest dining establishment opened its doors to the public just ~ before the New Year.
