That was the feeling of the many people who attended the opening of the new Scugog Chridian School last month. Initially, when the Building Drive Committee originated last June the people thought they were looking at a project of several stages that would take three years to build. But because of the success of the drive, the school was built with monies raised all within six months! Soliciting friends and family, the drive miraculously netted $100,150. which allowed the 60'x116' educational facility to be built: To keep the costs down it was mostly volunteer labour and recycling that enabled the school to be built in such a short time. - Material from the six portables, formerly 'the school', was mostly, recycled. ; The new non- denominational school teaches students from kindergarten to grade eight. Currently five teachers teach about 70 students and there's room for thirty more. The land the school sits on is leased from the Hope Christian Reform Church. Mayor Hall had been present at the official sod turning on August 29 and was present again on Décember 19. At this latter event Mayor Hall presented the shovel (used in the sod turning) to Bob Letter to the Editor Powell, Chairman of the Scugog Christian School Board, with the inscription "Official Sod Turning - Thursday, August 29/95. "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path". Mr. Powell "told the Citizen he was surprised at the success of the building drive. "It's"been great - a dream come true", he said. "Everyone pitched in, even" many who aren't connected with the school". The balance of $20,000 still has to be paid and the fund raising committee is hard at. work to procure this amount. The official dedication of the Scugog Christian School will be January 14 at 2 p.m. Thanks to our neighbours To the Editor: As 1996 arrives wonder what the future holds, while we spend our time indulged in our problems and coping with our everyday existence. It's about good people who came from miles around to lend a hand when our crisis arose. Over 100 frightened cattle stampeded through their fences, going on the run in all directions. A dozer® of these cattle found their way to the Nonquon River, breaking through the ice into water too deep for them to handle. We are very grateful to all who gave their time. First, there were the young men who initially sighted the cattle and herded them off the road. Then there.were the neighbours who kept cattle in their own yards until we could get to them. Other men who are now nursing sore muscles and backs helped pull 'the cattle from the freezing waters. These people brought skidoos and ropes to get back to the dropped cattle that surely would have.perished without - their assistance. The ladies helped too by preparing coffee and KNIT FUR ll "Wrap Yourself Up for 1996 SCUGOG CHAMBER of COMMERCE Annual General Meeting / Dinner At Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 419 - 6:30 to 10 PM THURSDAY, JANUARY 11th, 1996 Cocktails 6:30 PM Dinner 7:00 PM sandwiches for the men braving the cold. A neighbour family helped bring the last heifer home - the animal we thought was lost. And our new neighbours we hadn't met yet were there to help too. It hardly seems enough to just say thank you to people who, at a drop of a hat, left their own work to help someone in a crisis. That's Greenbank, Rural people that keep the meaning of good - neighbours alive, being here to help our fellow man, without stopping to think if they have the time. ' Some, neighbours get in more fixes than others and the Phoenix's are guilty of this. But that feeling of helplessness is always made easier when good) people pitch in to help. Everything turned out great. All the cattle are alive and well - and no one was hurt! Hopefully no one in the community will have to experience a crises, but rest assured your neighbours will be there in a flash. They're just a phone call away. Aren't we lucky!!!
