healthstyles deb mcdonald As this time of year comes around, it is easy to get caught up in the trap of eating too much and exercising too little. With. this in mind, a positive game plan can be activated to "counteract unhealthy, habitual processesifrom setting in. Your dietary program may need a complete overhaul; but to make changes that are 'easy to swallow' for a lifetime, you should start with a strategy of replacing fat calories with healthier carbohydrate calories. For example, at breakfast, have your whole-wheat toast with 'lite' fruit spread instead of butter or margarine. Enjoy your high-fibre bran, low in sugar and fat cereal with 1% milk or yogurt. At lunch or dinner, likewise, choose turkey, chicken or fish over high- fat luncheon meats or red meats. Grilled chicken breast is much lower in fat than chicken wings or fingers, when dining out. For side dishes, choose rice, pasta or salad (preferably not Caesar) instead of french fries or onion rings. When enjoying Italian food, pasta with tomato sauce (in lieu of meat or cream sauce) would be a better choice. On pizza, try vegetable toppings or pineapple instead 'of pepperoni or bacon. Ask for salad dressing 'on the side'. For dessert ask for fresh fruit cocktail when possible. Finally over and above these simple substitutions, remember that old cliche "out of sight, out of mind." (Freeze some of your Christmas goodies!). If you don't purchase high- fat, high-sugar products then you won't be looking for them in your fridge or kitchen cupboard. Avoid temptation and shop wisely in an effective guideline. And most of all, keep active. You don't necessarily have to join a fitness club or hire your own personal trainer, just borrow or buy an exercise tape. (The library has quite a few to chose from.) Start walking, gradually increasing your distance. Implement changes gradually and routinely. May you all have a healthy and fit New Year Year!
