Daniels It is often lightheartedly stated that originality is the art of forgetting your source. However, this attitude can be dangerous in the world of publishing. To present the words or ideas of another as your own is plagiarism, an act of literary and artistic theft. Many careers have shipwrecked on the shoals of plagiarism. In recent years I have grown increasingly troubled by the apparent ease with which preachers use the words and ideas of others without 'acknowledging they are doing so." Being a pastor myself, I read much of the same material as other pastors, and I have heard stories and ideas passed off as the speaker's own which I knew came from another source. The incessant pressure to produce weekly sermons, communicating spiritual truth in contemporary and meaningful ways, is an unrelenting challenge to every pastor. In most evangelical Christian churches, this pressure is not for one weekly sermon, but for two, three, and sometimes four presentations lasing thirty to forty minutes each. Since pastoral ministry involves much more than preaching, there is administration, counselling, visitation, committee ~~ meetings, funerals, weddings, etc., the time allowed for sermon preparation can be, in short supply. It is when the weekend closes in and the sermons are not prepared that the pastor faces the temptation to use another's material, passing it off as his or her own creation. There is nothing wrong" with using material from someone else, that is why we have libraries, but it is imperative that we acknowledge the source of that material. While we may never be charged with plagiarism, and though our parishioners may never know, failing to acknowledge our sources involves losing our integrity. I raise this matter because I failed to do very thing in my col on William Borde The Book, January 3, 1996). Though the information concerning Borden is common knowledge which could be culled. from several sources, I got the idea for my column from a devotional reading written by Dennis DeHaan (Our Daily Bread, Dec. 31, 1988). Failing to acknowledge this source was not purposeful, but an oversight in the rush to get the article to the Citizen office on time. While I have permission from the publishers of "Our Daily Bread" to; use their material though most readers of this column would never know about this particular reading, I believe it is'a matter of integrity to 8ét the record straight. Producing a weekly column on ethics from a biblical perspective puts one squarely in the public eye, where Words written' can be measured by actions lived qut. I firmly believe in the validity of the words of Scriptlre which say: "He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy" (Proverbs 28:13 NIV)! It's imperative that we be men and women of integrity, and that includes acknowledging the help we receive from | others.
