In the past few years, many new businesses have started from homes all across the country. Initially people began in their spare time by using an émpty room, den, basement or garage and have eventually turned it into full-time business. However, there are many different issues to consider before taking the plunge. Starting your own is attractive. Some of the benefits include part-time hours, lower start up costs, a flexible lifestyle, tax . benefits, and increased opportunity to grow because of fewer imped- iments. The opportunity to be your own boss seems to weary with constantly being told what to do. As well, there «are some who want to open their own business for | 'personal job security: to control theit own destiny. However; there is a downside. Managing a home business is similar to starting any business in terms of issues, options, risks and government guidelines. Sit down and plan out what you will do * before you enter intothe marketplace. Write out a business plan, even if it is only a rough idea. There are many experts out there who will give you advice. Some will even provide it for free, such as government offices or colleagues who have started their own business. There are literally hund- reds of different types of businesses out there that can be operated from your own home. A partial list of these include rcal estaté agents, insurance brokers, trades persons, contractors, manufacturing concerns, consultants, daycare operators, 'desktop pub- lishers, artists and craftpersons, export/import . brokers, landscapers, professionals, computer consultants,' public speak- ers, cosmetic salespersons, mail order, dressmakers, tutors, and free-lance writers, to name a few. With home business growing in great numbers, many businesses are attempting to capitalize on their success. * The classified section of the newspaper offers many opportunities for starting entrepreneurs. Some of these offer thousands of dollars in rettirfi for a PENNY & ACCOUNTING SERVICES INVESTVENT ADVE minimal investment. Often the only thing that you receive is a small kit that gives you phone numbers that could have been provided for«free, if you only knew the right person to ask. Remember, be wary of schenfes that offer instant success. An ad that offers quick money for small investments are usually bad. Most of the time, these are scam artists looking for a quick buck. The old adage applies here: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. The best bet is to call your local Better Business Bureau to be assured of a company's repntation. At first, starting your own business can seem' like a daunting task, fraught with great hurtles and immense difficulties. But remember, success can be achieved if you come up with a good plan, stick to it, and keep your goal in mind. (The above article was stibmitted by Betty Penny of Penny & Associates.) » Assoc.
