Police nab suspect *A Saturday night incident that began in Oshawa ended about an hour later when Durham Region Police officer arrested a man near Durham Road 28 west of Utica. | A spokesman said a man approached a motorist parked in the lot at Pompei Pizza on Taunton Road East pbout 7:00 PM and attempted to steal a car at knifepoint. The driver refused, grabbed the keys and fled on foot. A suspect then made off in a 1987 Pontiac Grand Am used for pizza deliveries. Police were notified immediately and about 7:30 PM, Durham officers spotted the suspect vehicle heading north on Highway 12. £ They pursued the vehicle to. the Manchester intersection where the driver switched off the headlights, struck another - vehiclé and then headed west on Durham Road 21 with the lights still turned out. Officers in a second Durham Police vehicle saw the driver leaving the suspect car just west of Durham Road 23. Several Police officers joined in the foot chase and tracked the suspect through the snow. He was found just after 8:00 PM hiding under a large spruce tree by officers R. Paul and D. Mitchell, and surrendered without a struggle. . Morell Graham, 28, of Courtice, is facing charges of armed robbery, attempted armed robbery, possession of a prohibited weapon (a butterfly knife) fail to stop for police, fail to remain at the scene of an accident, possession of stolen property and driving while prohibited. He has been remanded in custody. * Snowarama Sunday Snowarama for Easter Seals returns to Port Perry this Sunday (Jan. 21) after an absence of several years and organizers are gearing up for as many as 400 riders. "We hope to see that many riders out on Sunday," said. local organizer Marion Lee, adding that the fund- raising target for the ride is $5,000. The event is being hosted by. several area snowmobile clubs including Port Perry and the Cartwright Dynos and UGE Fa members of the Port Perry Rotary Club will be assisting with the administrative work. Snowmobilers 'can head out on the trail starting at 8:00 AM Sunday morning. Registration will start at that time and continue through to 11:00 AM at ride headquarters at the Latchgm Centre on Port Perry's waterfront. Pledge forms for riders are still available at local snowmobile clubs and, dealerships and for the rider who brings in the most in pledges there is a first prize of a polyethylene "sled dawg" worth $400 donated by Techstdr of Port Perry. At 12:30 PM Sunday afternoon, there will be a special opening ceremonies at the Latcham Centre. Area politicians have been invited to attend and they will meet'two Township youngsters Nick Herlod and Lindsay Young who benefit from the Enater Seals programs. Youth slightly hurt in crash A ten year old Hampton youth suffered minor injuries in a snowmobile accident on Lake Scugog Saturday afternoon. Durham Police say the youngster was snowmobiling near Portview Beach when he rolled a 1996 Arctic Cat. He was taken by ambulance to Port Perry Hospital and treated for the injuries. Meanwhile, Durham Police continue to investigate the theft of snowmobiles in Scugog Township. he Last Saturday night a Polaris model was reported stolen from a residence on Old Scugog Road in Blackstock. Neighbours told Police they saw the snowmobile on the back ofsa red GMC pick-up truck heading southbound on Durham Road 67. And just before midnight Jan. 8 a 1994 Polaris Indy model was stolen from a residence on Cedar Grove Drive in Caesarea. Police say the machine was driven on Lake Scugog. Thieves were apparently getting ready to drive off with a second Polaris when the owner discovered the theft. . An Ashburn resident spent the day snowmobiling on Lake Scugog and stopped at a Water Street restaurant for a bite to eat about 6:30 PM before heading home. When he left the restaurant, he found his two Polaris 1991 models and a homemade trailer valued at $11,000 were missing. Thieves had cut the locks off the trailer chain.
