RE (4 4 4 dur 4 14M MM Say Courses By the Book by David S. Daniels While feverishly trying to omplete a project, I heard my son call me from the family room adjacent to where I was working. Not really catching his words, since he and his friends were parked in front of a blaring TV, and I was creating noise with my project, I retorted, "Close the door yourself! I'm busy and you are quite able to get up and walk the six feet to the door!" I then heard him say, "No one said anything about a door, Dad, Mom is calling you for supper." Chagrined, I dropped my tools, and passing through the family room, said, "Am I stressed or what?" A recent cover story in McLean's magazine indicates Canadians are living stressful lives ("Coping With Stress," McLean's, Jan. 8, 1996). McLean's Senior Writer, Patricia Chisholm, citing Peter Hanson, a physician who has studied and written about stress, says working couples face a "time famine," spending an verage of 12 minutes a day in personal conversation with one another. And kids are really gefting short- changed, , receiving a whopping 3.5 minutes per day of "quality time" from mom and dad. Chisholm refers to a 1992 Candda-wide study on stress and depression, which revealed nearly half of Canadians feel "really stressed" weekly. And if you believe things may be improving, © Chisholm reminds us of last month's McLean's poll conducted with the CBC's The National revealing 5 oyt of 10 Canadians are more pessimistic today than they were ten years ago ("Coping With Stress", McLeans, Jan. 6, 1996). So we are stressed out, and it appears this dilemma will continue into the future. While a certain amount of stress is good, keeping us going from day to day, too much stress is harmful and damaging to one's health. Dealing with stress has become a growth industry, with a plethora of self-help books, and growing numbers of stress consultants and therapists. However, one statement in Chisholm's article leaped out from the page. She writes:""Harvard Medical School cardiologist and stress researcher at Exercises that Relax and Strengthen Both Body and Mind TAOIST TAI CHI SOCIETY of Canada - is starting Introductory Classes in Little Britain DR. GEORGE HALL PUBLIC SCHOOL THURSDAY, JANUARY 25th, 1996 7:00 to 8:30 PM For information or to Pre-register call Flora Cornacchia at 705-786-2644 or Lindsay Club at 705-324-3487 Lindsay , ft HEALTHSTYLE 3 fit Your Lifestyle _ 4 Set + Gre Term Results WEIGHT LOSS & FOOD MANAGEMENT PROGRAM + A Canada's Food Guide approach to healthy eating + Personal Menu Planning to + Confidential One-on-One Nutritional & i Behaviour Modification Counselling Own Realistic Goals al Changes to Give * 4 Emphasis on a Positive Attitude dnd Herbert Benson attracted wide attention at a medical conferencé in Boston last month when he and other scientists confirmed what many theologians have long believed: prayer, or other types of meditative breaks, can have astounding therapeutic effects." So we have a choice; laying out hard-earned dollars for self-help books, paying $50-150 a session with a therapist, or spending some quiet time communing with God. Growing Christians know the value of spending time in prayer and meditation on the Scriptures. Such biblical statements as: "In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps" (Proverbs 16:9 NIV), and "Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well" (Matthew 6:33 NIV), help keep the matters of living in perspective. The Bible declares God gs the ultimate controller of this universe and recognizing that awesome truth will do wonders in reducing the stress in your life.
