After more than two years of government paper work the dream was to become a reality in early December. But, a few days before their flight to freedom, the Iranian government, for whatever reason, demolished Ali's 'green card' and would not allow him to Jeave with Souline and the children. Through a member of the church, the Hope Christian Reformed Church learned of the family's plight and decided to sponsor the family. The first week of their new start in Canada, the family lived with the Van Andel family in Port Perry. Since then the deacons of the church have rented an apartment in town and the Kurdish family has adjusted well. . While rione spoke English when they got off the plane they're certainly gung ho to learn Mr. Bowma told the Citizen. "Altholigh they have OHIP, the family isn't collecting welfare from the government" Mr. Bowma said. "They are being sponsored by our church." Mr. Bowma says he feels great being able to help the . family.' Already Souline and her children call him "Uncle Rob" and members of the Committee visit her and the children weekly. The family is already getting involved in the community. While Hussein is attending Port Perry High School, Helen and Hassen are attending the Scugog Christian School. As for Ali, "we continually hope and pray Ali will be here with Souline, soon" Mr. Bowma said. This isn't the first time the Hope Christitn Reformed Church has sponsored a family from a war-torn country. Al 10 years ago the ghurch sponsored a Vietnamese family.
