Given the rancour with which some journalists treat these poor, unenlightened folk (I could mention a few names, but you've likely encountered them on the.pages of the Toronto Star - the journalists, that is), one could be forgiven if he or she thought the religious right was out to subjugate the entire planet. i NATHANIEL DAVID JACOB DYCK Safe in our arms - October 14th, 1988 Safe in his Shepherd's Arms - February 11th, 1989 Dear Lord, : You chose to answer our family's prayer A miracle burth a new son to share You chose to lend him such a very short ime You needed our Lamb, he was not only mine You apparently hid a much better plan For moms and dads - 's hard to understand Our hears were broke in twa with grief But we're ever so thankful for our bebe. When Nathaniel arived in eternity sublime The angels rejoiced and heaven's bells chimed You gathered him up. 30 safe in your arms Like a Shepherd you'll keep hum away from all harm Nathaniel - We can hardly wait to hold you Loving and masin you Diddy, Mommy and Nic Some imply (or outright declare) today's religious right is the natural successor to that dreaded company of the past, the Puritans, ember them? I've heard a Puritan described as a person living in dread fear that somebody somewhere might have a good time sometime. But in fairness to journalists writing about them, it is the religious right which opposes such things as the current safe- sex education in public classrooms, condom-di sing machines in school s, radical feminism, abortion, euthanasia, pornography, recognizing homosexuality as a legitimate lifestyle - to name just a few of the sacred icons of contemporary political Delayed due to construction difficulties. By the Boo a 2 Andiit is also true hat this so- called religious right contgins a few cranks, just as is true of any group of people. My concern is the guilt-by-association tactics used by some when describing the religious right. The simple fact is, there is no iron-clad up called the religious right, . ut rather a group of people with varying degrees of conservative convictions. What I find more disturbing is that the religious right haj become, for some journalists af least, a euphemism. for fundamental, evangelical Christianity. In other yore some unscrupulous journalist latch on to a radical fringe conservative (e.g. a white making an supremacist) ALL NEW MAYTAG EQUIPMENT with - WASH & FOLD ~ SERVICE | shroxious, lente va ment, and present that e "efon) as typical of evangelical Christianity. Then we are reminded of the danger of Christians imposing their morality on society. To illustrate my point, last year I was involved in a lengthy conversation on an internet discussion group where several [ariaparts were warning that form Party Leader Preston Manning's fundamental Christian beliefs spelled ominous danger for Canadians. The thought that an tical Christian could become a Prime Minister was too much to swallow for some of the group. Are Canada's evangelicals fun-hating, freedom-denying radicals intent on imposing a theocracy on C: ians? Not on your life! From my perspective, evangelicals comprise some of Canada's best citizens, believing in honesty and integrity in government and society, and supporting fleedom of expression, association, a belief. When they speak out on, issued of morality, they do so with sincere concern for the health and well-being of all Canadians. a. Do evangelicals have carefully | defined moral values? Yes, and they'believe they have equal right with other Canadians to propagate those values within the bounds of good taste and lawful expression. One reason evangelicals are driven to propagate their values is found in'the ancient Biblical book of Proverbs: "Where there is ignorance of God, the people run wild; but what a wonderful thing it is for a nation to know and keep his laws!" (Proverbs * 29:18 TLB). Lt Just what is the evangelical agenda in Canada? Tl give you mysperspective next week. » normal? 0. I am several months past my loss now. Most days I do very well. At first, the waves ¢ are large and powerful and they knock us 4 down. As we work through our grief, the waves begin to subside to a degree. When we haven't noticed any waves for a while, we know that we are suce rebuilding our lives.
