- 18 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, February 6, 1996 CITIZEN SPORTS Keith closing in on 100 points by John B. McClelland Junior C fans will be keeping a close eye on Keith Leslie as the classy MoJack forward closes in on two scoring milestones. With two home games left in the regular schedule, Leslie needs three points to hit the century mark this season and three goals for 50. He had a pair of goals and chipped in with an assist Saturday night at the Scugog Arena a8 MoJacks ran rough-shod over the Sutton Ice to the tuneof 7-2. Leslie and the MoJacks take to the ice Thursday night (Feb. 8) at the Scugog Arena to face cellar dwelling ~~ Bobcaygeon Bullets at 8:30 PM. You can bet linemates Todd Dennis and Steve Barkwell will be doing their best to set "Les" up for. the hat trick to give him the double'milestone. If he fails to reach the mark against the bullets, he'll. have one last chance this coming Sunday night as MoJacks round out the regular season at the Scugog Agena against Sutton at 7:00 PM. Head coach Chic Carnegie is rooting for the smooth-skating Leslie who has a very deft touch around the net, and said " Leslie will see some "double shifts" over the next two games. "But we still need to win these games to stay ahead of Little Britain for second place," Carnegie said after the win last Thursday night. If the MoJacks finish second (they are four points up on the Merchants) they will have home ice advantage in the opening best of seven playoff with the Merchants. Carnegie is looking ahead to that first round series and said the key to beating the Merchants will | 16:08 with help from Ridgway and and Gavin Cochrane, back in the line- up after sitting out a three game suspension. Final goal of the game was by Pigeau at 8:06 of the third on a set-up from be to skate with them and , Cory Bricknell. check them into the ice. "We've just got to be over them like a leach," he said. The Merchants, who have a game in hand on the MoJacks lost two last week to Uxbridge and Campbellford, but Carnegie badly wants two wins in the final two games. Last Saturday evening, there was a big crowd on hand as there was free admission for Port Perry Minor Hockey players. "It was nice to see a good crowd. It helped get our players pumped up for the game," said Carnegie. ModJacks were never in trouble against the Ice as they jumped into a 2-0 lead on markers by Dennis in the first minute from Barkwell and Leslie and Leslie at the mid-point from Barkwell. Kenton LeFort caught * the corner on a low early in the secohd td make it 3- 0 and Ryan Ridgway upped it to four at 12:07 with help from Ryan Speake and Trevor Bremner. The Ice tried to make a game of it with a pair of goals in less than a minute by Mike Hewitt and Brett Breitkreuz. But the MoJacks had their four goal bulge back inside two minutes as Leslie was set up for a tip- in by Mike Pigeau and Todd Stirling and Bremner found the top shelf at BHI Speck of Greenbank Is the lucky winner of two Toronto Raptor tickets for thé game February 5 against Portland Trail Blazers. Greenbank Lions president Ken Toms presented the tickets on Saturday. The draw raised about $750 for the Lions Club and this money will be used for the , Greenbank Pavilion. Netminder Paul Roberts had a fairly easy night in the cage facing just 18 shots, while MoJacks fired 37 chunks of rubber at Jeremy Ranich. -SLAP SHOTS: Coach Carnegie was more than happy with the way his blue line corps performed against the Ice. In fact, he was pleased with the entire defensive effort. "When you limit a team to just 18 shots. on goal, you're doing something right." And he'll be looking for a similar kind of team effort defensively if as expected, MoJacks and Merchants hook up in the playoffs. Regular blue liners Duane Empringham and Scott Heasman are still on the shelf nursing injuries, but should be ready for playoffs. Likewise forward Chad Kearns who has missed most of the season with a nasty break in the forearm. The. two final games for the MoJacks are both at the Scugog Arena, this Thursday at 8:30 against the Bullets and Sunday at 7:00 against Sutton Ice who are fighting for the final playoff berth with Lakefield. We'll find out Thursday when MoJacks face Bobcaygeon at the Scugog Arena. With Keith is captain Gavin Cochrane who had a strong game on the blue line Saturday In a 7-2 win over Sutton Ice. Soe story at left for detalls. Swampers hot on Bruins tail The Homelife Swampers dumped a lethargic Blackstock Brewers squad in game one of action en Sunday in the local Broomball league. This keeps the Swampers hot on the heels of the league leading Brooklin Bruins with three games remaining on the regular season "Schedule. At the midway point of the first period, Brian Pomeroy hooked up with Dale Lown to produce the first Swamp goal and from there they came in quick succession. With 2:39 left on the clock in that period it was still 1-0 but over the next one minute and twenty-six seconds the Swampers could do no wrong as they netted 3 more for a 4 goal lead. ' Jason Price scored the first from Ron Vokins and Mike Butt, with Butt adding the next one from Pomeroy. % Lown then notched the fourth from Pomeroy and Mike Mole. Pomeroy wasn't yet finished as he added his second of the game late in the final frame with the assists going to Lown and Mole. 'Smoke' Tremblay recorded his sixth shutout of the year in the win. The Stouffville Scorpions made it close for Trader Sam's coming back from a one goal' deficit in the dying minutes to force overtime which was eventually won by Trader's and thereby moving them into third spot, a point ahead of Blackstock. From the opening faceoff of the game, Trader's stomped down the ice for the first goal with Ken St. Amant getting the credit with 'help from Tony Dennis and Gene Woodrow. The tying marker for the Scorpions came from the broom of J. Poultin with Leo. Pettipas and Mike Vahloon drawing the assists. In the total goals overtime period it was all St. Amant as he scored two more with the assists going to Charlie Dennis on both of them. This gave St. Amant the hat trick as he had accounted for the opening marker back in the first. Brooklin Bruin's continued their position in top spot by knocking back a pesky Framers Gallery squad to the tune of 3-1 in a closely contested affair. The Framer's counted® first late in the first périod with Tyler Renaud scoring form Richard Brough. THis was short lived as the Bruins answered back beforé the end of the frame with Chris Lepine countering from Shawn Mitchell and Ron Attwood. This score held up until with just over 6 minutes to play in regulation time Niek Attwood got his first of two from Murray Down and Rob Mason. With goaltender Glen Archibald 'sitting on the bench and owning a 2 man advantage, the Framer's had it backfire on them with Attwood getting his second with 15 seconds showing on the clock. Mason was awarded the assist as he shot it down on ice to relieve the pressure and it was Attwood's speed that got him the rebound off the + boards prior to any de gnce getting back. Blackstock curling news by: Fred Ford With only 10 players able to make it through the January 29th snowstorm it was difficult to continue with league play. Only Fred Ford and Richard VanCamp were able to field teams and so they were able to win by default. But every cloud has a silver lining. Cam Porter was able to practice with his team mate Fred Ford for the upcoming Fletcher bonspiel. Keith VanCamp and Merlin Suggitt teamed up against Porter and Ford for a two on two eight ender. It was good for Cam and, Fred that Keith and Merlin weren't quite on their game and were only ° beaten 10 to 3. The other make up'ganie between Richard VanCamp and Todd Doyle was a little more even and Doyle persevered with an 8to 6 win. The first Push Stick Bonspiel is slated for the Guelph Curling Club on Wednesday March 20th. Teams will consist of two players with one player pushing four stones away N from the glass and the other player pushing four stones back. Sweeping will be allowed from the hog line in and there will be no free guard zone. This should prove interesting. For those of you who are not aware of what the push stick is, it allows you to push the stone like a shuffleboard puck and save wear and tear on yqur knees and back. The information that I have received on the push stick is that they cost $53. plas shipping and handling. Blacksteck Curling Club has.ong on order and 'we hope to demonstrate it the night of the Prestigious Golden Slider Challenge to be hel on Monday, Feb. 26, 1996. We want to mention some more of our "Golden Slider" sponsors. Please support your local merchants like Philp Pontiac Buick, Nestleton Country Store, DJ Taylor Insurance and John Wolters of Frank Real Estate.
