a Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, February 3 1996 -- 3 - Citation for doctor who saved teen's life by Heather McCrae 'Nine people. will be awarded Citations from the Durham Regional Police Department next week at a Regional Council meeting. Three are from the Scugog area, including Port Perry physician, Dr. Kevin Smith. Dr. Smith is credited with saving the life of Oshawa teenager, Tara Jackson, last March. About 1 a.m. on March 13, Tara and a friend, Angela Colacicco, were driving on the Scugog Island Road in search of the fenowned "Ghost Road" when Tara lost contral of her vehicle. The car landed upside - down in the ditch, leaving Tara crushed between the steering wheel and the back of her seat, suffering massive head injuries and several fractures to her upper body. On duty that night, and on his way to treat a patient at the Community Memorial Hospital, Dr Smith was one gf the first crash to arrive at the scene. Crawling through the passenger window, he found Tara hanging upside down, unconscious and bleeding profusely from her injuries. Knowing she needed urgent medical care, he dialed 9 - 1 - 1, using the phone from a nearby home. He also contacted" the hospital and ordered a bag of medical supplies which was raced toghe scene by police cruiser. Returning to the scene, Dr. Smith and ambulance personnel tended to the 17 - year old..She was hooked up to an IV with the (IV) bag attached to a fence post as firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extricate Tara from the wreck. "Every second counted" Dr. Smith told the Citizen. "She was losing lots of blood and I feared she had severe interdhl injuries". Dr. Smith accompanied Tara in the ambulance to the hospital where her condition was stabilized before being airlifted to St. Michael's in Toronto. Spending a week in a coma, Tara remained at the city hospital for a month, during which time she had several bouts of surgery. Upon her release she spent two months.in a rehabilitation centre. Last summer, Tara and Dr. Keviri Smith of Port Perry will receive a police citation next week. His actions at the scene of an accident last year saved the life of Oshawa teen- ager Tara Jackson. Memorial for well known music teacher A Marie Devereux Memorial Service is being held Saturday, February 10 at the Siloam United Church in London, Ontario at 1 p.m. After fighting cancer for the last year Mrs. Devereux passed away in a London hospital January 31. For almost 20 years Mrs. Devereux was a very prominent music teacher in Port Perry, instructing in piano, vocal and organ before moving to Aurora and London where she furthered her musical career as an examiner and adjudicator. Affiliated with both Royal and Western Conservatories, Mrs. Devereux has left behind a legacy of music teaehers in Scugog Township. Some of these are Paula Copithorn, Audrey Beauchamp, Janice Grove, Bev Foster, Mary Holt, Glenn Taylor, Linda Kyte, Lori Beer, Kathy Malcolm and Joan Lee. "Dr. Smith was my guardian angel" Tara told + the Citizen. The family also gave an angel to nurse Gerri Cooper who had hurriedly made up the parcel of emergency supplies. But Tara wanted to do more. Through conversations with PC Dave Mann, the investigating officer, and Inspector Nancy Desjardine, shé learned Dr. Smith's name could be submitted for a Citation. When. Dr. Smith learned he is to be a recipient of the highest award given by the DRP, "he told the Citizen he was pleased. * "I didn't expect it -- what Lidid was all in the line of duty -- but T"m very pleased to receive it (citation) he said. While Tara says she thinks she saw the Islhnd ghost, she knows for shre Dr. Smith was her guardian angel that destined night. ' "If he didn't show up I probably wouldn't be here today" she said. Two other Scugog men will be receiving Citations on February 14. They are Murray McVety and, Dale Rutherford.
