(see story) by Heather McCrae Just about every week- end since the snow blew in last November Iain MacLean has been either training or racing on x - , country skis. His perseverance in the cold heipertainly paid off. ' The 17-year-old Seagrave '* man recently placed third in the province at the Ontario Championships in Thunder Bay and qualified to compete in the upcoming National Junior Cham- pionships February 27 - March 3 at 150 Mile House, near Prince George, BC. Bgpresenting Ontario, Iain says all the provinces and territories will be represented out West. In cross - country skiing £ompetitions there are "classic" and "skating" events. "Classic" d#scribed the style one thinks of when they think of cross - country skiing, whereas "skating" is more like gliding on skates, with the assistance of poles. At the. upcoming National competitions lain will be competing in classic races of varying lengths and will be entering the 10 km skating race, as well as a 10 km skating relay event. "The hills are often just as steep and long as for downhill skiing, except are more narrow with sharper corners" he explained. Since last fall Iain has belonged to the FitCompany Ski Club, based out of Hardwood Hills in the Barrie - Orillia ea. "FitCompany is one of the best clubs in Ontario as far as racing and coaching go" he told the Citizen. Recently, representing his school, Iain won the GTA® cross country championships, which have qualified him to compete in Y the OFSSA championships February 21 - 23 in North Bay. As thisiévent is held prior to the Nationals in BC, he's still undecided about competing due to the amount of schegl hell miss. The final event Iain will be competing in thi season is the Spring serio of Tagine in Northern Ontario, scheduled for the first week of March break. Training all year by cyfling, roller skiing and jogging, lain's in fine form by the time the snow flies.
