=" 30 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, October 24, 1995 wm Pee Wee Legionaires bow out to Cobourg The Pee Wee Legionaires and the Cobourg Cougars were deadlocked a# one game apiece when the " Legionaires headed to Cobourg on Feb. 20th for the rubber match of their playoff series. The players and fans alike were expecting this game to be 'tough' and twenty-two seconds into the game it became gvident just how tough! ntly, Cobourg scored, although it was not evident to anyone in the stands or on the ice, (either Port Perry or Cobourg), other than the refs. Despite considerable protestations by our bench and our goalie, Chris Monsma, the goal stood and it obviously affected our Légiotiaires as one minute later Cobourg scored again on a goalmouth scramble - this time for real. Despite being down 2-0, our team did*hot give up and a Cobourg penalty proved costly to them as Matt MacMaster scored on a power play. Jason Whitworth and Dean VanCamp assisted. Shortly after, Chris Skerratt went in on a breakaway but was turned away by the Cobourg goalie, and the 2-1 score stood into the second period. The second period started out well as Port Perry tied the score at two all, when Dane Gray flipped in a loose puck after Jason Whitworth made-a nice move to split the Cobourg defence and get a shot away. Mark Blakley also assisted. However, a turnover in the neutral zone shortly after, gave Cobourg the lead again 3-2. ! The Legionaires kept pressing hard and were rewarded with some great chances. Scott Brownson, Steven Wygerde and Braden Tarbotton all helped control the play and create opportunities. The rearguard corps of David Justyneki, Grant Hooker, Sean Jeffrey and Tim Jones all worked hard to hold the line and force turnovers. 'The Cobourg goalie came up big time and time again though. A Cobourg bench penalty started the third period but the period break seemed to have hindered the Legionaire offense as they were unable to sustain an attack and anther Cobourg goal at the 5 minute mark all but put the game out of reach Another controversial referee call on a called - goal late in the third added to the Legionaire frustration. Pulling our goalie with a minute left in the game created more scoring chances but it was not to be as Cobourg held onto win 4- 2 \ Chris Monsma (with moral support from fellow cage cop Carl Evans) did his best through the game despite some after - the - whistle hacking by*the Cougars and the de- moralizing officials impact on the game flow. Next week, ll wrap up my. 1] If it wasn't for the suspension in play, I wouldn't even notice the all-star break. It's tough to take a game seriously when a player like Steve Yzerman is not even on the ballot. ; It's bad enough he wasnt named to the team, but to not even have the heart and soul of the best team in hockey, the Detroit Red Wings, on the ballot is ridiculous. He's Detroit's point leader, blocks shots, hits, drops the gloves on occasion and is the character guy. He's averaging about a point a gam a high plus player, leads the team with five game-winning goals and here's his goal output since his 1983:rookie season: 39; 30; 14 (injury); 31; 50; 65; 62; 51; 45; 58; and 24. He has topped 100 points six times. Somewhere I heard he's not a playoff guy, but he seems to have racked up 66 points in 60 games. All this and he doesn belong on the all-star team - give me a break. Stevie always seems to get it in the gar. Remember last Canada Cup - He didnt make the cut, alth everybody thought his play was among the best at the training camp. I remember one year we (the Bruins) were in first place and nobody made the all-star team. Figure that one out. Somebody got hurt and Terry O'Reilly was picked to go to the e. I said, "Remember, Terry, when you play, play like a Bruin." "Terry nailed everybody in sight, scored a'goal and almost yi in 4 for MVP It -- so the last time ai threw a check in the pe pei on classic and give the straight goods ae Fox Television's glowing puck.
