| The early years at Community Hospital Throughout the early 1900's and until 1946, Port Perry and the sutrolinding communities were served by three private hospitals. These hospitals were established by dedicated nurses 'and staffed by - Registered Nurses In the Spring of 1946, after it became known that Mrs. Whitmore was offering for sale the private hospital on John Street that she had operated for many years, a number of local citizens mounted a campaign to raise funds to establish the Community Memorial Hospital. A total of approximately $13,216 'was raised and $2,000 more was pledged. Mrs. Whitmore was paid $9,000 for the John St. property, and Community Memorial Hospital began operations on July 1st, 1946. A Government Charter was obtained in « October of 1946, and by December a letter 'was sent to local doctors notifying them that the Hospithl was available for their use. At the same time, the expectation was that the licence authorizing the institution to operate as a" public hospital would be forthcoming, thus making it eligible for yearly government grants.
