The theme this year Is TV Classics on Ice. Port Perry IGA Juniors win leggue championship Well the scene w Sunday afternoon for a © very exciting end to the ringette league play. Port Perry 'had earned a berth in the championship game by defeating Ajax and their opponents would be from Markham. «Port had had their ups and downs with this team and today's game proved to be no different. The girls knew what they had to do and they came ™ out on the ice ready for the win. Markham opened up the scoring and took a two goal . lead midway through the 1st period. Port's Janine Hammond answered back to tie the game with assists going to Jen Elliot with two and Janna = Senyk and *Kathleen Rojas picking up singles. Markham slipped 2 quick-ones by Port's Jen +Donnelly before the buzzer went to end the period. Second period action was fast and furious with Jen Elliott closing the gap to one goal as she teamed up with Janine and Janna to "beat the Markham netminder. Within the® next 30 seconds Markham scored but Jannine and Janna once again attacked the Markham end zone and narrowed the score to one. With the period . winding down Port applied the pressure and once again Janine found the spot this time assisted by Lisa LeFort tieing the game at 5-5. Kathleen lit up the board once more for Port Perry and gave the home team the goal advantage with only 3 minutes remaining. Markham was getting worried as they called a time out to discuss their 'strategy for the remainder of the game. Unfortunately Port picked up 2 penalties in the last 2 minutes of the game which allowed Markham to play 5 on 3. - The Port Perry offence and defence held off their opponents. until the 41 second mark when Markham tied the game forcing overtime. Wi Port still short handed the clock was set for 15 minutes of sudden death overtime. All the girls rallied together and played like the champions that they 'de. Their passes were right on, their defence was stronger than ever and . Jen was exceptional between the pipes. Port took command of the play and with only 3 minutes played into the over time period Janine passed to Lisa LeFort who wrapped around, the Markham net-and made no mistakes as she popped that donut between the legs of the net minder making the Port Perry IGA Junior Girls the League , Champions x the 1995-96 season. Throughout the season this team has been faced who played forward last yea? . 'was being transplanted and transformed into a super goaltender, we lost a few girls, from our team midway through the season due to work and other obligations, and we fortunately aquired Bonnie-Jo who has been a definite asset on defence just to mefition a few things. Alot of credit has to also go to Lisa Cooper, Steve Holt and Fernando Rojas for not only being a super coaching team but' for all the countless hours they have so freely given. Thank you has to also be given to the parents of these wonderful young ladies who make sure they are always at the rink on time and drive them all over the countryside to play the game that they love so much, Congratulations to all the girls as Port moves into the 4 Regional Ch with many ch and all the girls deserve so much credit. Many of these girls had never played on the same team, Jen Donnelly hips being held ! over the Easter weekend hosted by Oakwood, Lindsay and Sunderland.
