] \ . ¢ primarily deb mcdonald 2 Tealthstyles What's in a glass of juice? The marketplace is full of juice "drinks" and 100% real fruit juices, alone or in blends. They're sold fresh, fortified, frozen and as "unfrozen" concentrate. They come in bottles, cans, cartons and individual "juice packs" with straw included. No longer just a refreshing thirst quencher, juice beverages are now often promoted for their supposed nutritional edge over other beverages. Here's how to make, the healthiest choices. From citrus and cranberry juices, we obtain substantial amounts of vitamin C on a daily basis. Various juices provide other nutrients as well. Apricot nectar, for example, is high in vitamin A, in the form of beta-carotene and other earoteroids. Orange and pineapple juice contain healthy levels of the B. vitamin folic acid. Orange, prune and tomato juice provide potassium. Prune juice is also high in iron. Purple grape juice contains certain compounds (tannins, flavoroids, for example), found in red wine that may help prevent dangerous blood clots. But the best of juices can't compete with whole fruit in at least one important regard: fibre. Fibré is a primary reason why health authorities recommend five or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables. Most juices, on the other hand, have only negligible amounts. Some important nutrients are left behind in the fibrous pulp. Some juice beverages, however, are not much better for you than soda. Check the nutrition label and) you'll find some products boasting "real fruit" actually contain very little .of it. = Some "Fruitopia" fruit beverages, for example, are only 11% juice. "Snapple Grapeade" contains 10% juice, "Sunny Delight Florida Citrus Punch" contains about 5%. Government regulations determine that all juice products disclose the actual percentage of juice they contain. Those that are less than 100% fruit juice must add a ward like "beverage", "cocktail" or "drink" to indicate that they are diluted. But that doesn't mean you should rule out all but PORT PERRY 985-3115 90 McLaughlin Road, oxy-med unpsav 705) 324-179 OPERATION SCUGOG : Spring FOOD DRIVE Giving Is Recelving FOOD BANK DONATIONS may be dropped off at the SCUGOG FIRE HALL #1 Crandel Street, Port Perry SCUGOG FIRE HALL #2 . Some fruits, like apricot, mango ~and passion fruit are toos thick or strong tasting to be drunk straight. Others like cranberry and lime are too-acidic. Such fruits need to be watered down or mixed with sugar or other - ingredients in order to make a palatable beverage. Even jn that diluted state however, those fruits can be quite nutritious. From a nutritional standpoint, it doesn't much matter-how your juice is packaged. Frozen canned, bottled or cartoned, any particular fruit juices have roughly the same amount of nutrients (or lack' thereof). Fresh squeezed juice will be more nutritious, provided you use fresh fruit. But not by all that much. A typical 6 ounce glass of fresh ' squeezed orange juice, for example, provides 93 milligrams of vitamin C (or roughly 1.5 times the - recommended daily amount); a glass of "Minute Maid" frozen ,concentrated provides about 72 milligrams per same amount (which is just'over a single- -serving recommended daily amount.) A'good rule of thumb is to vary our selection of fruits and juices to get. the maximum benefit from the full range of nutrients.
