a 2 Citizen -- Tuesday, April B, 1996-- 21 "r CITIZEN SPORTS : a Port Juveniles sweep aside Sutton Ice for the coveted All-Ontario hockey banner : Photos and story by John B. McClelland Mission accomplished for the Port Perry Panthers. There will be one all- Ontario hockey banner to hang from the rafters at the Scugog Arena as the Panthers clipped Sutton Ice 6:4 Saturday night in front of a large and vocal home town crowd. The win put a complete wrap on the Ontario Juvenile A championship series, giving Panthers nine points to one for the Ice. Earlier in the week, Panthers put themselves in a position to take the series as they nipped the Ice by a meagre 6-5 margin in a game played in Sutton. Needing a tie or a win Saturday night, it was obvious Panthers were not to be denied, and it was obvious they did not want to have to make another road trip to~Sutton on Sunday. Panthers struck first in this one when Chad Garvock found the range from between the hash- marks on a set up from Matt Hobbs and Greg Thompson. Panthers had several good chances in the opening period but were not ablé to get the power play clicking on a string of Sutton minor penalties. Captain Jett Card scored ablg short-handed goal, set up by Steve Stiles, at right. Head coach Jamie Menzies shows off the hardware. i Mike Pashley in the Panther cage was not especially busy through the first period and made his best stop 11 minutes in when he took a rising screened shot square on the logo and held on to prevent any rebounds. Ice used their power play early in the second when Shane McDonald caught the net on the glove side to tie things at one-each, but two minutes later Garvock gave Panthers a 2-1 lead with his second of the contest. He controlled the puck 15 feet in front of Ice keeper Branden Cox and made no mistake with a great wrist shot to the top corner. Thompson got credit for an assist on this one. But Sutton was not about to roll over and die as they knotted things at 9:40 on the power play with Jeremy Filby clicking from in close. Just a handful of seconds later, Panthers went ahead 3-2 (this time for good) when Jeremy Norton was set up by Jeff Card and Mike Leeming. Norton wired a back-hand under the cross bar from about 10 feet in front of the Ice net. N Less than a minute later, the bulge was two goals when Card fed Ian Shrigley a lovely pass at the Ice blue line and he scampered around a defender to bury a shot upstaits to cap a very clever effort all around. But Sutton's Mike Pellerin made it 3-2 at 11:51 when he was set up in the slot for the team's third straight power play Kent Taylor mugs for . the camera after the The behind-the-bench team of Dave Menzies, Scott Menzies, Jamie Menzies } goal. That made it-4-3 and the outcome of this was still very much up in the air. Until that wily veteran Jeff Card decided to take « things in his own hands with just®11 seconds left in the middle stanza. Killing another penalty Card took an outlet pass at his own ling from defenseman Steve Stiles and spotting some open ice down the right side, he outlegged ' a Sutton defender to the goal crease where he put a great move on the keeper to tuck home a back-hand. That may have been the turning point by the Panther captain as it gave the red and white a two- goal bulge to take into the dressing room after 40 minutes. The importance of Card's goal was driven home in the first minute of the third when Sutton's Filby made it 5-4 on a short- handed breakaway effort of his own to beat Pashley with a riser. Both teams were going all out in the final period with the Panthers tasting victory and the Ice hoping to stave off elimination. And Greg Thompson sent gave the boys all the margin they would need at the mid-point as he was in on' a partial breakaway by Garvock and Gord Bentley. Thompson, who knows what to do with the old biscuit made no mistake with a fine shot to the glove side for a two goal cushion that seemed to take thé wind out of Sutton's sails. The final buzzer touched off a joyful Panther celebration on'the ice as captain Card accepted the Syl Apps trophy for the Juvenile A championship for this province. And the crew from Sutton, who put up a gutsy performance throughout the series, had to settle for the runner-up hardware. The celebrations continued in a crowded and very noisy Panther dressing room as the players popped corks on something very cold and bubbly. Panthers positioned themselves for the home ice victory with a 6-5 win last Wednesday night in Sutton as Greg Thompson led the scoring with a hat +- trick, Steve Stiles fired a pair and Jeff Card added a single marker. ) This is the only: 'all- Ontario victory this seadth by a Port Perwy Minor Hockey team and much credit is due the coaching and management team of Dave Menzies, Scott Menzies, Jamie Menzies and Andrew Steele for thélr hard work, patience d confidence in this crew of young men.
