While the possibility of drowning is always a very real concern, the real enemy is hypothermia. Hypothermia results when core body temperature sufficiently to result in shock and depressed bodily functions. The normal core body temperature is 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahgenheit). At 32 degrees Cglsius, unconsciousness occurs, and at 30 degrees Celsius cardiac arrest and death will generally occur. Many people are surprised to find out that the average adult, without the aid of a floatation device, carf@uryive a maximum of two hours iff water that is 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit). In water that is close A [Computer Consultants] declines _ to freezing, survival time is reduced to a maximum of one hour, however, the indjvidual may be so weakened by the sudden drastic body heat loss, that they may be unable to Help themselyes - after only ten minutes in water. Heat is lost from several critical areas: the head, neck, groin'and under-arm areas, duefto ¢he reduced muscle and fat tissue in Jthese'areas. In the event that an accident does occlr, it is essential that you protect these areas, by not removing .clothing, and remaining as still as possible. Should you attempt to swim to safety? Only if the distance is extremely limited! Tests have proven that hypothermia is so debilitating, that even expert swimmers are only able to cover one tenth of the distance they would normally be.able to cover. It is best NOT to abdndon'a boat that has capsized, but to try to crawl up on top of it instead, and signal / yell for help. The body size*and fat conjert of the individual will determine the rte at w is lost. It is for this reasbn that women and childrert tend to feel the effects of hypothermia before many men. Hypothermia can occur without falling into water. While any form of dousingi(rain or splashing) can hasten the loss of- body heath simply being outdoors without the appropriate level of clothing to match the temperature can" produce hypothermia. The onset of hypothermia can come in many ways shivering, clumsiness, slurred speech, confusion, fatigue, forgetfulness, cold stiff muscles, and drowsiness: Recognize these symptoms for what they are, and despite the protests of the individual involved, get them inside to a warmer environment and into dry clothes (or at least out of their wet clothes). What you should never ! ich heat do is give 'the victim alcohol. Alcohol dilates the blood vessels, which accelerates heat loss. Similarly, vigorously rubbing the skin or pumping the legs could result in a condition referred to as "After Drop". The cold blood located in these extremities will be pumped back into the core area of the body, resulting in a further * .drop in core body temperature, that eguld lead to unconsciousness or death. Obviously the preferred method to deal with hypothermia would * be seek professional medical attention. However, if this is not possible, there are several courses of action that are recommended. 1. Apply warm objects (45 to 5Q degree Celsius) such as wet towels, or hot water bottles to the neck, head, and body trunk areas. 2. Give-warm fluids ¢avoid coffee, tea or cocoa as caffeine, like alcohol will dilate blood vessels). 3. Provide direct heat to the affected person thru body to body contact. (In the event the severe hypothermia has set. in, aryifg) respi ation may be used to inj air and immediaté heat into t| affected person's lungs.) Boaters should remember that a P.F.D. (Personal Floatatiqn - 5 Devicé) will virgually double their survival time in cold 'water, as they will not have to expend precious energy to stay afloat. Snowmobilers should make use of floatation coats, d carry a product called "Ice of. The coat will provide additional' floatation and keep ¢old water 'out, preserving heat. Ice®Out, is essentially a pair of hand held spike devices, joined by a rope. These spikes can be jammed into the ice. The individual can then pull themselves quickly up onto the ice, out of the cold water ... ~ and should then seek immediate. rhedical attention OUTDOORS by Steve Wickens appears regularly | in The Scugog Citizen. ~ SERVICE DIRECTORY 985639 Call the Scugog Citizen (905) 985-6397 for Service Directory Information and Rates for 3 Month to 1 Year = Auto Inslirance Have you renewed your car * or home insurance?
