But that's exactly what happened in Stratford earlier this month when his long time friend and colfeague Vin Walker called his name to 'accept the F. R. Feaver "Mr. Softball" Award presented annually at the Ontario Amateur Softball Assoc. convention. It is the highest and most prestigious award the OASA hands "out for pdedication and long time service to the sport of fastball in Ontario. "I was not expecting that at all. It really caught me by surprise and left me at a loss for words," the Port Perry resident t8ld the Citizen. Born and raised in Blackstock, Wayne' s involvement in the sport of fgstball goes back more , than 30 years as a player, umpire, coach, manager, executive and spokesperson ort Perry was honoured recently with the "Mr. Softball" Award by the Omtario Amateur Softball Association. The following year, he took a local Midget team to the all-Ontario semi finals and in the years since, has coached at every age level, winning four provincial 'banners, once with the Squirts, twice at the Midget level and once with a Juvenile teant. "I have been very fortunate to (have coached) several very good teams over the years that wert on to win championships," he said. Wayne said he enjoys most the on-field coaching and instructing with young people, 'and over the years, he has had a positive influence of Hundreds of young players in the \ corhmunity. For sevlral years in the 1970's, he worked with Vin Walker and Ron Taylor as an instructor with Softball Skills schools all over Ontario and for the the past few years has organized an "in house" skills development program each spring for the local Association. At the provincial level, he's been to every OASA annual meeting since 1967, has worked at OASA tournaments andeplayoffs and is currently a convenor for this zone. Last season, he coached ' the Greenbank Gamblers ) Senior Mens team and will be back behind the bench again this season, ' Asked by the Citizen when (or if)she plans tor Hang 'em up and have a summer to himself, he smiled, shook his head and said, "I just might go back to coaching at the Squirt _ level again to start all over."
