1] FIFTY, Scugog Citizen -- Tilesday, April 23, 1996-- 7 & » v IFESTYLES Odd Fellows host largest-ever district rally by Heather A One of the largest International Order of Odd Fellows (1.0.0.E) rallies ever held in this district took place 14 weekend. Forty-nine candidates from all over Ontario, including Paul Phillips of Port Perry, received their first, second and/or third degrees at the rally held at Meadowcrest PS in Brooklin. As one of the largest fellowship events in 1.0.O.F,, over 30 members of a Degree Team from Philadelphia took part in the celebrations that started Friday evening with a reception and ended with breakfast Sunday morning, at Beethoven Lodge 165 in Brooklin. But, it wasn't a weekend for the men only. The wives and friends of the men spent half the day shopping on Saturday and, that evening, almost 250 men and women enjoyed a delicious dinner af Brooklin United Church. Attending the rally. as a reporter, I was given a warm welcome. 1.0.OF. isn't foreign to 'me. My father, Ken Holliday, was a member of Beethoven Lodge 165 for over 50 years and his brother, Walter, is now enjoying his 67th year as a member of the same lodge that was founded in 1875. Lloyd Shor member of Warner Lodge™5, Port Perry, assisted the Wegree Team and was also instrumental in organizing the weekend's events. Lloyd's currently Deputy Grand Warden of District 41. For almost 50 years 1.0.0.F. has been an important part of his life. Speaking to the Citizen, he said one of the reasons he jorned Lodge as an 18- year old was "because of its baseball team!" Friendship, Love and Truth are the three links joining 1.O.O.F. together and the Lodge's matto is. Warner Lodge 75 currently has almost 100 members. Although they range from their mid- twenties and upwards, the majority of members are well over fifty years of age. Paul Phillips joined the Port Perry chapter last fall and received all three degrees at the closed meeting on Saturday. In his mid-forties,.Paul told the Citizen, "a lot of people have helped me in my life, now it's my turn to help others". A special moment for me was when I met Dr. J. McKinney. While growing up on a farm outside Brooklin, Dr. McKinney was our family physician. Next month he'll enjoy two significant milestones in his life. First, he'll be 92, and "secondly, Dr. McKinney will be celebrating 65 years as a member of Beethoveff Lodge 165. It was over 45 years ago this June that I made my way into this world. Born on "Lodge night" I was the reason the good doctor was late for his meeting and, to Odd Fellows held the biggest rally ever in this district last weekend when 49 candidates from all over Ontario received their degrees.
