\ wr 1d Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, May 14, 1996 Fine finish for Scugog firefighters! team "A team from the Scugdg Fire Department came with a second place finish in tHe Eastern Ontario Auto Extrication Competitions held over the weekend in Kingston. Under the direction of Captain Dave Bail pall, the team of Jamie Donaldson, Scott Boyd, Ken Parker and Dave Reid placed second in.the hand tools category and third in the un-limited (open) class. Defending world champs from West Carleton placed first overall and the team from Brock Township Fire Department placed third. This second place finish qualifies Scugog for a berth in the World championships this September in Gainsville, Florida. There were 17 teams in the Eastern Ontario competitions and they had to work through rain and extremely cold temperatures. And the Scugog tgam ran into a real eye opener in: their first scenario in the hand tool category--a helicopter upside down on a vehicle. "This was the first time we had ever seen this in any competition," said captain Ballingall. "I was very proud of the way the team handled themselves in these competitions," he added. The Scugog team will be doing sofme public fund- raising to held off-set expenses to compete in the world championships this » fall in Gainsyille. Watch for fund-raising evénts in the community in the coming months. Auto extrication (getting injured victims out of wrecked vehicles at the scene of an accident) has become a crucial part of | the work by all firg . departments. The speed in getting victims out of wrecks is credited with saving many lives. The competitions allow team to encounter many different scenarios, "exchiange notes" with other firefighters, and receive evaluation from , Judges. What they learn at these competitions is put to good use at the scene of accidents.
