The doctors are angry. And the brunt of their anger (surprise, surprise) is" directed at the Provincial government of Mike Harris. Through the Ontario Medical Association the people of Ontario are going to hear about what doctors are calling a "crisis" in what used to be billed as the finest medical service anywhere on the planet. . The message (surprise, surprise) is all about money, or. from the doctors perspective, the lack of money. Ontario will spend, $17.7 billion this year on health care services. That's more than we spend on any other service including education. Biit the doctors are going to tell us thatiis still' $500 million short. "Under-funding ofamedical services had gone too far. We are hoping the people will tell the government they want theig health care system protected," said Dr. (Alber Sch h 7 NOW, FOR THAT TRIP 0) SCUBOG ISLAND... How Do WE. The government expects the doctors to provide these services for no fee. That's a rather tall order. How many other people would work for nothing to provide a necessary service, or any kind of service? The Ontario government likes to tellus that it has come up with the money for 23 new Magnetic Resonance Imaging Machines. The doctors will tell you that's all very nice, bi these machines produce. The doctors will also point out that the population of Ontario is aging rapidly and this trend will continue as the baby boomer reach the "golden years." The demand for more and thore health services provided by doctors is going to increase at the same time. not going to force Mr. Harris and his government to change its mind on health cares spending this year. But there's a critical message for the future, and it's not very nice. : "If the current funding patterns Continue, the delivery of medical care will reach crisis proportions by the turn of the century." Doctors and nurses are the front line people in this system. Already a lot of people think our much-touted health care system has done down-hill in recent years. Where will it be by the year 2000. Debt reduction, balancing thé budget and putting money back in the pockets of the people in the form of tax breaks are ble things for any government to attain. But at what d budget ora tax break? ery citizen of Ontario has a vital stake in health care. There is nothing more important. We have reached the point where doctors are simply shutting their offices, for a day or two each week because they won't be paid for services if they keep working, That is not a happy thought. Yes, it is wonderful to have the latest high tech diagnostic equipment. But what good is it if there is nobody there to read the findings and decide what course of medical action is necessary to make theSatient well again? How many experienced, well trained doctors will Ontario lose this year, next year and the year after to other jurisdictions where they can work and get full payment for that work? In mounting their public information program, the doctors are asking the people of Ontario to listen to their message and let the government know that they want a health care system with enough money inthe proper places. We must heed the message and likewise the people at Queens Park who make the decisions on where the dollars are spent these days. ' there is no money to pay the docs who review the images®, This information campaign launched by Ontario's doctors is Sw e last 50 years, cau, LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The fiasco! of Bill c-33 To the Editor: The latest legislative fi fiasco - the passage of Bill C-33, proves that our federal government {s out of control and is not listening to the wishes of the people. Democracy in Canada is in big trouble. Amazingly, our government thinks they can solve all problems confronting society today with more money, a bigger budget, and more legislation and laws to protect the noisy minority groups -- all at the expense of the silent majority. One must ask, where did all the inequity begin?" Why in OUR Canada? After World War 11 and the initiation of the United Nation's "Universal Declaration of Human Rights," our government sent us on a euphoric journey - towards the land of eternal milk and honey: benefits without cost, freedom without responsibility, equality without consideration, respect as a right, and rights siniply for the wanting and" . And so we have travelled t in the vortex of a delusiofary spiral, spinning ever faster, until . we have now reached our, zefiith > - Fool's Paradise! The UDHR' was drafted by Canadian UN employee John Humphrey. The Declaration was unveiled 10 December 1948, and he was honoured after his noble efforts .on the 40th anniversary, 10 December 1988. Our academic elite gave us a Charter of Rights, liberalized our nation's thinking, made laws to allow any and practically all pursuits of "happiness," and . reduced the value of human character and morality to nothing. They have promised society tore for less than possibly can be delivered. Our Jaw markers have become confused. Human rights and human wants, two entirely separate issues, have begome to mean the same thing; for the establishment, the demarkation line between the two has become indistinguishable. human rights, freedom, and multiculturalism have became the vogue; human character nd morals are social dinosaurs. * Through our Charter of Rights 'our government has established language rights, religious rights, employment equity rights, pay equity rights, human rights, media'rights, homosexual rights, and' "gender rights. Our' government has established discrimination laws, hate laws, and even thought laws. Excellence is given no special status. * Good deeds and meritorious. conduct go unrewarded, shortcomings go uncensured, and anti-social _ behaviour must be tolerated and is accorded special status to ' . compensate for its negative public image. To voice objections is to be a bigot -- identified with discrimination and hate. Social turmoil has become the norm. Small wonder. ' Jann Flury .
