Minor hackey starts to gear up for September Port Perry Minor Hocke, elected a new executive and board of directors at its annual meeting Sunday night. ~ And one of the first some answers on 'the classification system. Port Perry is classed as an A tentre by the OMHA and puts A and B rep teams in the OMHA 1ovd, orders of b will be to find a new president for the coming hockey season. After two seasons at the helm, Bill Van Camp'has decided to step dowif, but he will remain an active member of the executive in the position of immediate past president. He cited the demands on his time and the need for some "new blood" as his reasons for declining a third term a#lresident.' Linda Ashton was named vice president in charge of operations; Jim Duncan is vice president for development and Richard Farrington will continue his duties as secretary treasurer. Named to the board of directors at Sunday's meeting are Al Goreski, Dave Stewart, Deb Tarbotten, Pete Christie, Doug Danter, Richard Lefort, John Churchill, Doug Harper, Bob Dalby, Dennis Symes, Linda Tindall, Chris O*Connor, Gerry Kane and Rick Penstone. Mr. Van Camp said he is copfident the Board of directors Will be able to convince one: of its members to take on the crucial job as président. "If necessary, he said, the rules may be relaxed to allow a person to take the job who has not served the required three of the last five years as a director. Along with finding a new president, one of the most important pieces of business facing the new board before the start of the 1996-97 hockey season will be to.come up with play each spring. Last year, Port's B teams faced squads from A and even AA centres and the result was not a single win in 15 games. That situation was clearly not acceptable to Port Perry Minor Hockey, said Mryan Camp. The organization may have a better idea of what approach to take once OMHA holds its annual meeting June 8. However, if there are no changes from OMHA, the local organizatiori may do one of several things: drop the B teams and place those players in the house leagues; apply to OMHA to have the B,teanis play against BB cefitrgs rather than A or AA if OMHA playoffs; or change the local rep team system to major/mirior (based on age) which would mean the minor teams would have to play at the A level in Minor Hockey has the authority to suspend problem players and have parents 'barred from attending games at the arena. . With the cost of ice fental slated to increase $5 per hour this September, which will add about $7500 ¢ to the total bill of Minor Hockey, registration fees may have to go up. That decision will be made by the new board at a meeting this summer. © * : Last season, Minor » Hockey spent $120,571 on__ ice rental fees at-the arenas in Blackstock, Manvers and Little Britain, the largest single expenditure in the Scugog, organization's $199,949 budget. N The financial report shows a deficit from last «segson &f $12,000. This was because of the decision to pay the $12,000 commitment to the new recreation hall at one time, rather than spreading the payments over three years. The fact 'that only one team (the Juveniles) advanced to the all- Ontario finals last season hurt gate receipts. The fi ial stat t shows OMHA playoffs. Other issues that came under di ion Sunday night included a continued discipline problem with players and parents. Mr. Van Camp said there were several incidents last season, though he stressed that the problems seem to come from just.a small handful of players and parents. "I'm not sure what the solutions are," Mr.Van Camp told the meeting in his president's address. But he suggested that Minor Hockey executive members may have to be present at all games this coming season to deal with problems when they arise. just over $9400 in gate receipts, well below the $13,000 that had been in the budget. Mr. Van Camp said Minor Hockey must set up a special committee to explore ways of generating revenue from the new hall at the arena. In his remarks he praised the members of the board and executive for their hard work and dedication in providing hockey for over 500 youngsters ages five to 19. "The bottom line is that these kids had a place to play this game," he said.
