Now 92, Dr. McKinney and his family are celebrating the 65th anniversary since his arrival at an Open House on June 8 at the Odd Fellows Hall In Brooklin. See story for detalls. Brooklin doc celebrates 65 years by Heather McCrae It's been 65 years since Dr. John H. McKinney . first came to Brooklin to start his practice of family medicine. \ To celebrate this milestone, his friends and former patients are invited to an Open House on June 8, at the Odd Fellows Hall in Brooklin, from 2 - 4 p.m. The only one of three brothers and a sister to Yugeme a medical career, Dr."McKinney said it was their family doctor who probably influenced him most about entering medicine. Mr. McKinney recalled to the Citizen how he broke his arm as a teenager and the family's physician, Dr. Sharp, was called to their home. "There were no x-rays back then" he said. After renting some rooms "in a house owned by W.L. Smith and hanging up his shingle, his first patient was a hydro man with a gash to his head. After sewing up the wound,the man returned to the hydro camp where | 40 fellow employees were working. It wasn't long before the rest of the crew were patients of Dr. McKinney's at some time or another. Dr. McKinney and his fiance, Irene, were married in October that year and movéd to "the white house on Baldwin Street" where he continued to practice family medicine. The couple had a son, John 'Alexander, who followed in his father's footsteps. The younger Dr.McKinney recently retired from his private practice in Napanee. Married to Marie,the couple has four children and three grandchildren. Driving his first car, a 1929 Ford with a rumble seat, in those initial years in practice, Dr. McKinney delivered many babies in their homes but after 1940 his maternity patients went to Oshawa General. He also had privileges at the Community Memorial Hospital. Often in the winter Dr. McKinney would be met at the end of the driveway by a horse and sleigh. Giving anaesthetics at least 4 mornings a week at OGH, before coming home to start office hours at 4 p.m. he'd drop in to see patients enroute. Office hours wduld begin at 4 p.m. and ext®nd into the gvening. After Mrs. McKinney died in 1978, the goud doctor continued to practicé out of "the white house" for another three years before officially retiring Soon after he tied the knot again, marrying Chrissie Simpson and the couple lived in her house on Cassels-Road. Since Chrissie died a year-. ago," Dr. McKinney remains, in thle house located near the Odd Fellows Hall. This December he will have been a member of the 1.0.OF. for'65 years. Dr: McKinney, his son John, and families look forward to seeing friends and former patients on June 8 to help celebrate the sixty-fifth anniversary of his arrival in Brooklin. Something for all - at Craft/Quilt Show The Antique, Craft and Quilt Show is anticipated by many people and this year we have made some changes that we know will enhance the show. The Port Perry Patchers are joing us this year and in order to allow them the propen space to display their beautiful quilts, we have split the - pi w between two buildings. Starting at 10:00 a.m, Friday, June 7th, Whe Arena will host the craft & quilt vendors and on Saturday the entire show will be. open with the addition of the Antique dealers in the =new Community Hall, located beside the arena at 1656 Reach Street in Port Perry. The show will run Friday, June 7 from 10:00 am. to 8:00 p.m, Saturday, June 8 from 10:00 a.m. to 65:00 p.m. and Sunday, June 9 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. One J admission price of $3.00 gets you into both shows on Saturday and Sunday. On Friday it's $3.00 for the Craft & Quilt Show. If you attend on Friday,and wish to see the Antique show, just bring your ticket stub back on either of the following days and get in for $1.00. Children under 12 are admitted free ' of charge. ' Everyone attending gets a chance at a free draw for our gift basket. The Port Perry Patchers are holding a raffle on a quilt. The Port Perry Junior C Mojacks Club Executive will be on hand with food and beverages for sale. There is sure to be something of interest for everyone so come, out and join us for a few hours.
