YT T 1 [EDITORIAL Oink, oink, oink, Let's see if we can figure this one out. Canada's minister of National Defence David Collenette forks over $100,000 in taxpayers' money to a former campaign worker in his Toronto riding. The money went to Stephanos Karabekos for "consulting." Ah, don't ya just love that'word. What Karabekos did for his 100 G's was inform members of the Greek community in Toronto why the federal government cut them off Canadian pensions for their efforts as resistance fighters against the Nazis in their homeland during the last war. Before Canada cancelled this program, some $30 milion had been spent. Just why Canada in the first place paid Greeks this money is strange indeed because every country fighting the Axis powers in World War 2 had underground and resistance members. But that's another story. Anyway, the 100 Gs cafe from Collenette's discretionary fund as a winister of the Crown--no tender, few questions asked. Collenette turns around and tells us it was money well spent because it saved thetaxpayers $30 million. Wait a minute. The goverment had already done away with the pensions to the Greek veterans. So, how could paying somebody $100,000 to explain why save anybody any money. It was a done deed. What it did, of course, was save Collenette's backside in his own riding which has a large number of voters of Greek origin. To say it saved the taxpayers $30 millioh i is se. For 100 Gs he could send out a heck of a lot of explanatory letters. But since when does any government hire people to provide personal explanations on why funding programs are getting the chop. Come on Mr. Minister of Defence. You spent taxpayers' money on a campaign workek in your own riding. Any benefit wilfgo right to you should you seek election next time around. 'Instead of trying to pull the wool over our eyes with some idiotic tale of saving us money, why not just call it like it is: a blatant example of good old-fashioned porksbarrelling, the kind of whigh we 'haven't seen since the Brian Mulroney: days. Oink, oink, oink. Good luck, Alex Good luck to Durham MP Alex Shepherd who vows to gét trust was quietly moved out of the country in 1991 without | paying the capital gains tax, about $500 mills, according to Shepherd's calculations, * » At this time of year especially, we are sure a Tot of Canadians are wondering exactly the same thing. Even the auditor general raised questions about his report to Parliament recently. A Toronto newspaper identified the family trust as belonging to the Bronfman family of whiskey and other fame--one of the wealthiest in this or any other country, for that matter. *' . While we applaud Mr. Shepherd for trying'to un-earth more information about this deal; and for feeling that there appears to be one set of rules for the wealthy and powerful and another for the rest of us, we wish him lucf in knocking heads with Rev Canada. If there was no illegality committed as Rev Canada tells us, our elected reps in Ottawa ought to be moving with speed to plug whatever loop-hole $2 billion squeezed through en route to a tax-free haven in the sunny Caribbean. - some answers from Rev Canada on why a $2 billion family i this trgnsaction in { </26/36 SCUGoE CMZEN © HPS IF WE PARE GOING TO WIN CANOE. Traffic Lights - 1 contacted the authorities on the traffic lights and they, sent out a representative who sat in the plaza for hours and tested and timed the lights. After learning Be aware that the entire front of the plaza, that is the area in~ , front of all the stores is a _ designated fire route and Je Township has and will' be enforcing this by-law. Please be aware that this is done for the general public safety and the law states that you will not park in a fire route except for and while actually loading or unloading merchandise or taking on or discharging passengers. The key word here is (while actually engaged). This does not , mean park your car, go shopping, how the traffic lights were set ~~ comé back out, load. If you do up, we have found that there i isa rectangular/ device in the pavement wifich detects Metal. If your vehicle is positioned over \this device it takes 45 seconds from your detection till the time the light turns amber and within a minute your light turns green and you are out of the plaza. Does this always happen? Yes it does if you position your vehicle squarely over the detection device that is in the . The outline of the device can be seen. I just wanted to let our customers know that there'is a little secret in getting Tn and out of the plaza. That yes on occasion they have not worked properly, but for the most part, they do work properly if you position your vehicle squar§ly over the metal detéetion device. When I moved here, about 14 yeays ago, I had no idea of this really great organization. However, when I found out, I +had occasion to use the service to be transported and taken home from Qshawa General Hospital, | for a check up. Since I am in™ generally good health, now at 77 «year, I did hesitate to offer my service because of my travel habits. 5 However, Mrs. Imperial assured me that I only needed to let her know about my situation - ng problem! So, I became a volunteer. To encourage hors who-may hesitate to offer their services, I can truly that for me, it isa great and wonderful experience. Most of my "clients" are past 80 years - up to 97! To m; surprise, most of these are both bright and thankful for the service.
