i ' i 7. 2 - Yu 10= ~-- Scugog Citizen -- T . d July 23, 1991 » Three generations -- three recipes My, how times have changed. This fact struck me like a ton of bricks last week when I was talking to three very different 'brides': Dora Dowson who cele- brated her golden wedding anniversary on Sunday; Donna Kyte, who celebrated her silver anniversary on Saturday; and Christine Calderone,"a newlywed. 1 had been scratching my head, flipping through the paper, won- moré arguments are started and more laughter is shared at meal times than at any other time of the day. When 1 was growing up, sup- per time was the ultimate family gathering of each day, and while I can't always remember what we talked about, I can easily recall the suppers my mother fixed to keep us'all going. Like many. women of her gen- dering what to write about, when 1 realized the. three photos in 'Family Matters' represented three very different stages of wedded bliss. The blushing, turbulent, confetti-coated newlywed stage, « where love conquers all and noth- ing seems impossible. The "oh , thank goodness, the kids are final- ly grown up and we can enjoy ourselves" stage of 25 years: The settled, quier-friendship and long established rouyjne of 50 years. Throughout it gH, there's a lot of cooking going-on. Plenty of lunches to pack, suppers to pre- pare, dishes to 'wash, Meal times . are usually the most important moments-of the day far families and more problems ard solved, eration, my mother cooked for my father. Sure, she made enough to feed the entire family, but WHAT she put on the table was always to my father's liking. He liked liver. Us kids hated it. My mother cooked liver, Sigh. But as I got older, I realized the importance of cooking for the man in your life. It's an old saying, but "the way to a man's heart js through his stomach" is certainly true. Okay, I know it's old-fash- ioned, but when my own husband is well-fed; he tends to be easier to get along with. So my motives for making him food he likes is pure- ly selfish. Old-fashioned? Maybe. But if it works, use it! Their answers s Were all so completely different! It was a clear cut case of how times have changed, and how. womgn have changed over the generations. Dora and Merlin Dowson were married 50 years ago when times weren't as easy as they are now. Sugar, like many other ingredi- ents, was rationed and cooks were careful not to waste anything. Merlin teally Bked Coconut Cream Pie and his blushing bride was determined to please him. her dress. I wonder how many of us can do the same?) Recipe-wise, Donna came up with Dave's favorite -- Rollie Pollies! . "Everyone thinks they're hard to make. Wait 'till they see they're made with tea biscuit mix!" she laughed. My own mother made Rollie Pdllies when I was growing up, (only she called them Butter Horns) and I can still taste that golden, sugary, melt-in-your- mouth flavor. They taste so good, it's hard to believe heyes S0 easy to make. When I called Christine and told her what I was up to, she also had to laugh. "Recipe?" she said. "My husband does all the cooking, not me." I'm jealous. Imagine, a husband, that does all the cooking. While:it sounds a little strange and wonder- | ful to me, I've since been told of all kinds of young couples where the man is knows his way better around the kitchen than the woman. Christine's: new husband, Frank, has an Italian background and she says his Spaghetti & Meatballs is simply amazing. I can hardiy wait until my green peppers are ready in the gar- den to try this ouf. Thanks, ladies, for all your help! : a \ i \ Donna Kyte shocked her children when she arrived at her Surprise Silver Anniversary Party _ (organized by Susan, Karen, Jason and Steven, "I only ever made one, just after we were married," Dora recalls, "and [ made it with salt instead of sugar." Merlin was home on leave "from the army, and luckily for him, Dora's mother happened to lick the cocohut cream spoon before Merlim ever saw it. "Oh Dora, you've spoiled your pie!" she proclaimed. As it turned out, coarse pickling salt had been acci- dentally put in the sugar bin. After that, Dora stuck toranoth- er kind of pie éntirely, called Vegetable Pie. Since her husband owned Dowson's Red & White, a . Port Perry grocery Store, Dora . most often cooked 'leftovers' from the store: Vegetable Pie put three of"those leftovers to good use: weiners, vegetable soup and potatoes. Dora clipped the recipe from the Toronto Telegram and although she's never seen it print- ¢d anywhere elsg, she has used it all her life. - "It's, an easy, quick dish and it's delicious!" she says. Happy . 50th gnniversary, Dora and Men Donna Kyte laughed when I mentioned my recipe idea for this week and then she said hi A AEs & abgve), wearing her wedding dress!
