wp 14-- Scugog Citizen -- Tu day, July 231991 = "Port Perry Midgets 'fall one game short in Guelph _ The Port Perry Midget Merchants advanced to the cham- pionship game: in a tournament held over the weekend in Guelph. They were up against a tough squad from Stratford and ran into a red-hot pitcher who fanned 13 Port hitters to lead his team to a 7- 1 win for the banner. Jason Cochrane with a single and Darrell Vander Slagt with a homer were the only Port hitters to reach safely. . Playing through the brutal heat, the Port guys turned in some fine fastball 'just to reach the champi- onship. And Richard Brough deserves special mention as he tossed 18 strong innings on the mound. Port started the tournament with a nail-biter against Bracebridge, an old rival. This was a classic pitcher's duel from start to finish with the game tied at goose-eggs until the Sth inning when: Steve Laird showed a keen eye at tlie plate to reach first on a walk. Jason Cochrane pushed Laird "to second with a sac bunt, fol- lowed by a Tim Timms single. Jason McBride then slapped out a single to cash thé two runners and * Port held on for victory. Things were a lot easier in game two for the Merchants as tourney Steve Laird snapped a minor slump with three singles, a double and five RBIs. And John Ennis ended his three-year pitching "retirement" to throw two perfect innings for the save. He struck out one and didn't allow a batter to reach first. He provided some much need- ed relief for Brough who had fired 12 straight innings in the 90 degree humidity. With pitcher Brett Puckrin on holidays, Brough was faced with his third start of the day in the championship game. Take a bow, Richard for a tough day's work. In recent league play, Port defeated Oshawa 4-0, Bramalea 11-5, and suffered an 8-3 loss to Stouffville.
