h. - 'Regarding Henry and an actor Over the course of an impres- sive career, Harrison Ford has had ' the good fortune to appear in six of the highest making money films of all times. His work first caught the atten- tion of critics and film goers as the hot shot hot rodder in American Grafitti (1973) and the space pirate Han Solo in Star Wars (1977) He would repeat the Solo char- acter in 'the two follow-ups, Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983) By far his most successful work came in 1981 when hé was cast as Indiana Jones in Raiders mance in Mosquito Coast (1986) Portraying a man who hates modern society so much he takes his family into the jungle to live, Ford was terrifying, creating a man obsessed who bring about his own doom. It was the kind of per- formance that should win Oscars, but he was ignored, Over the next two years, he would ber seen in Nichols' ode to the working girls aptly titled Working Girl (1988) and he gave another performance as a prosecu- tor accused of murder in Presumed Innocent (1990) Again he was of the Lost Ark, the great at the flicks adventure] film by] Steven 'john foote ; Spielberg. In Raiders, he brought a daring {to the role I am riot sure could have been handled by any other actor. It was just a case of having an actor born to play the part. More sequels followed, both great successes, especially Indi Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) with Sean Connery as Ford's, father in search of the Holy Grail. While all the Indiana films were huge epic adventures, it says a lot for Ford that he was able to create a character that has become a legend and a household word. But despite all the box office success, it was not until after Raiders that Hollywood, began to take him seriously as an actor. His performance in Blade Runner (1981) gave hints at what might be there, but it was his: His lates film, Regarding Henry, may be his ticket (tally) to the best actor Oscar, by far the best work he has ever done. The single element that will lift a per- formance to gréamess is risk, hav- ing the courage to go out on a limb for your work. Ford does that in this fine new film and the results are heartbreakingly real. As Henry, he portrays a high profile, hard-hearted lawyer, so consumed with his* work he has litte or no time for his wife Sarah (Annette Bening) or his young daughter played by Mikki Allen. Swaggering through his office afier winning a case against two elderly people who deserved to win, he is an arrogant self-centréd work as John Book in Peter Weir's Witness (1985) that caused audiences and critics to really sit up and take note. VAs the tough Phily narcotics cop forced into hiding among the « Amish, Ford was superb, gradual- ly coming to terms with peaceful ways of these special people, falling in love with.a young \ widow who assists him. The film earned eight Academy nominations, including the first for Ford. The following year he again teamed with Peter Weir to surpass his work in Witness with a startling, oftén rage-filled perfor- boor, who ly considers his Henry, as he often resembles a wide-eyed innocent as he learns to speak and walk. But above all, he learns how to love again. The | tionship with his wife and daugh- ter is strengthened asinever before. He is emotionally wakened to all around him, discovering inside himself the great capacity for affection and love. His morals change, as a child's would, Ke understands right from wrong, leaning he does not want to be a lawyer, he just wants to be with his family. Ford's performance i is miracu- Bf lous, showing us two sides to this man. We see the selfish lawyer, and then we see the small boy, forced to re-learn évery- thing, but with only fleeting memories in his mind. The rehabilitation scenes are brief but power: ful, due to Ford's wok, and the great rapport he develops with Bradley (Bill Nunn) his ther- apist and later, his friend. Nunn, a huge man has such buoyancy and easy going nature, one gets the feeling Henry can't help but get better. It's a fine per- formance by Nunn. 'The film works best in the scenes between Henry and his family. Very strong are the scenes of the developing friendship with his daughter. Mikki Allen does a wonderful job as this sad-eyed lit- tle girl who feared her father, then came to love him. Annette Bening has become one of the hottest actresses around, earning her Oscar nomina- tion for the Grifters. As Henry's wife and daughter status symbols: , Astruggling wife, every emotion she But he is forever changed one evening, when after a party he returns home to find himself out of cigarettes.
