The: water is so low "there jusi isn't any shoreline left to fish," he said. "The guys can't get their boats close enough (to fish the shorelines) . More serious, he went on, is that mud is playing havoc with the motors and many of the compeli- tors were afraid of blowing an engine. The skunk rate in a derby such as this is usudlly about ten per cept, said Mr. Jennings; not 50 per cet. HE said thefow water levels . are one reason why Lake Scugog will be skipped next year by the Bass N Tario Derby. Mr. Jennings said the low water levels not only hurt Bass Derbies such as the one Saturday, they are hurting recreational fish- ing and tourism as well. Water levels in Scugog are controlled by the lock at Lindsay, and Mr. Jennings said the local municipal authorities should be complaining about the lack of water. He said he's. prepared to write a letter to the proper authori- ties in support of any action taken locally. ' "Lakg Scugog is a nice lake the (waterfront) facilities and boat launch are excellént for a derby, but the lake needs another foot. of water in it," said Mr. Jennings. Evaporation is also a factor for the. water level in the lake, espe- cially after the hot, dry spell dur- ing July. While nearly half the field came in skunked, there were some nicé catches of bass entered in this "live release" Derby. Hector Peach and Peter Davidson took home first with a combined weight (five fish) of 14.46 pounds. Second went 10 Frank Pugelj and Joe Paluska with 13.7 pounds; third was Gary Murray and Frank Latham Jr. who weighed in 13.6 pounds; 4th. whs the team of Bart Bowerman and Terry Lanstaff with 13.08 pounds, , and Sth' went to the husband-wife team of Rick and Deb Verbruisen, of Pontypool. "Deb will be fishing i in the Bass N Tario Classic (top 40 teams freq the five suthmer events) and "she is the first women ever to qualify for a Bass Derby Classic. The lunker of the day was a 5.5 "pound largemouth entered by Ray " Moulsdale and Dave Pethick of Lindsay. That fish was worth $800 in prize money. Rob Hill of Blackstock had a tough day, weighing in just over six pounds of fish and he failed 10 make the, Classic by just a few ounces. Just how tough was the fish- ing? Italo Labignan who co-hosts a.popiflar fishing program seen on TSN could manage just 2.42 pounds of 'bass out of Lake Scugog on Sunday.
