Nl Scugog rm -- Tuesday, A Fut 20, 1991 -- 11 _& Take A chance on hidden treasures Have you ever thbughi about going 10 a movie and there's just nothing on that strikes your inter- est? : So, you drive to the local video store but all the new movies are rented. You stroll around the store looking for a title that may inter- est you, or an attractive package that suggests the movie inside may be worth seeing. Perhaps you see.a movie that you have heard of, but it's not for you, Or you sge one you have always wanted to see, but just haven't got around to it. Take a chance. There are so many hidden trea- sures in 'the of estrangment takes Madonna is quite awful as Breathless Mohoney, despite the fact she can sing. The rest of the cast is merely good. In my mind the movie never really got the audience it needed, even though it won three Oscars, It's fun, not demanding, just easy going film watching. "At Close Range" is a difficult film to get on video, but well worth seeing. Director James * Foley creates the atmosphere for one of the more chilling real life horror stories of this generation. Christopher Walkin is a petty thief who after years video stores it is/impossible to list them all. at the flicks Movies ' that got terrific reviews * but john foote never generated much box office that have gone straight into video, or films that were never promoted properly, or never managed to _ find the right audience. ~ This week I want to look at five movies that deserved to be huge hits, but were not for various reasons. They are among the best buys on video right now, great enter-, tainment for a few dollars and a chance to sce some of the- better films of the last few years without going to the theatre, "Glory" was the best movie of , 1989, although the Oscar went to "Driving Miss Daisey." Director Edward Zwick created a stunning film that documents the creation of the first black fighting tegiment in the Civil War, an event that some historians feel turned the tide of the war. Gritty, brutally realistic, "Glory" is a magnificent piece of film-making, one of the real sur- prises of the '80's. Matthew Broderick is superb as the young white colonel sent to whip the blacks. into a fighting unit. Denzel Washington as an illiterate slave full, of angeg and hate is also superb. Morgan Freeman gives a quietly efféctive performance as a older black man who helps Broderick come to understand the ways of these men he never really can understand. "Glory" won three Academy Awards for its breathtaking oh tography, sound and for Washington's supporting perfor- mance. But it was not even nomi- 'nated for best picture, a shame really. because it ranks amafig the best war films and is certainly among the finest of the 1980's cinema. Warren Beatty's "Dick Tracy" _ was not the huge success it was expectéd to be; but the film is still loads of fun. Beatty won an Oscar for best direction of "Reds" in 1981, and it's no secret-his talent as a director far exceeds his gifts™ as an actor. With Dick Tracy he proyes that with a wonderful movie that is great to watch. A wildly original colour scheme, outlandish make-up and glorious photography allow this comic strip to spring-to vivid life. Beatty is OK as Tracy, the crime fighter, however, the film belongs to Al Pacino in a hilarious turn as Big Boy Caprice, a perfor- mance so over the top as to be . brilliant. his son into his "gang," to help them steal farm equipment, cars, money, whatever they can get their hands on. When the son is caught, he's thrown in jail in the hopes he will spill the beans about his father, long a target by. police and courts. But he keeps quiet until mem- world, when you think about it. Every year, they 'stage the Genies for the best in Canadian film, and every year there is maybe one film released that the average movie goer hds heard about. Bethune is the one movie Canadians have heard about, because .it was four years in the making and nearly bankrupt the producers in theprocess: Donald Sutherland gives a tow- ering performance as: the physi- cian who became a hero to the Chinese as he treated the sick and wounded_during the Second World War, . One of the best actors working today, Sutherland seems (o have a knack for choosing lousy movies, but "Bethune is his best As the omery yet gentle doctor, he commands the screen with a great deal of authority. Sadly, the film is dis-jointed, lacks consistency and sometimes has a "cheap" look about it. . But still, "Bethune" is a great film to watch, quité an example of bers of the gang start di ing, and it's apparent the father is is murdering them. Only after the rape of his girl- friend does the son speak, and the father goes after him, murdering the girl, Sean Penn; badly under-esti- mated as an actor is brilliant as the confused son, attracted by his father's outlaw ways, but repulsed when the way becomes murder. The movie cime to theatres in 1986, then faded away despite *SOme rave reviews. In truth, it's a brilliant little movie with fine acting, exobllent direction and a haunting musical score by Madonna. It's well worth the search to find it. No special effects monsters, just an evil father who graduated 10 pure psychosis long ago. "Bethune" is one of the few: Canadian films that I can recom- mend. Canada has one of the most curious film industries in the what Canadians can create if given the chance, the time and the money. We have so few heroes in this country, and with the government in a tough condition, I cannot see too many "on the 'horizon. Watching this story is rewarding and educational. ; "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" was a mildly suc: cessful comedy on its release in 1987, yet had enjoyed a "re-birth" on video. In fact, it's one of the better comedies made in the 1980's, surprising since there were a lot of funny fs made that decade. Steve Martin is the poQg sap who winds up. in a love-hatefrela- tionship with an over-bearifng John Candy, as they try to get home to Chicago through a series of disasters. Martin as the straight man is a joy, his quiet seething among the film's great strengths; no small ~EEi ONE HOUR PHOTO FINISHING FRAMING & CAMERA SALES = Ne] | 1" Hel Drop ON 135, 110, 126 Flim for Developing and get a SECOND SET of PRINTS - FREE! FULLY LICENCED under L.L.B.O. feat when you consider that John Candy all but steals the show as the crude. vulgar, but sensitive Del. What shakes the film work is the fact a friendship evolves by ' the end of the movie that you know will last. Poignant almost to a fault, the sentimental ending is well-handled 'by Candy and Martin, and especially by director John Hughes. If there is 'any doubt that Join Candy is not one of modem film's best comic actors, gheck this one out. He's very funny and oddly moving. So, there are five movies on video you might otherwisethave over-looked. Trust me, you won't find much better than these five.
