THE RURAL DEANERY The Rural Deanery of West York, held its annual fall meeting at the Anglican Church, Port Perry, on Tues- day of last week, under the presidency of the rural dean, Rev, G. S. Scovell, of Agincourt. About 60 members from the different parishes attended the meeting. The meeting opened with the cele- bration of the Holy Communion, at which the special speaker was Rev, A. McCallum, a missionary on furlough from the Yukon. At the meetings ailer the service, the principal speak- ers were Mr. Cuttle, the Finance Com- missioner of the Diocese and Miss Jay of the Welcome and Welfare Work in Toronto. During the afternoon Professor Taylor, of Wycliffe College, gave a ~very thoughtful paper on Humanism and Communism. This was followed by another lecture on "Unity" by Rev. W. Smyth, pastor of the United Church, Port Perry. After tea the Conference met again to consider Sunday School work, the speaker be- ing the Rev. G. Nicholson, rector of St. Clement's Church, Toronto. The proceedings finally came to a close about nine o'clock. ; ----------, MISSIONARY RALLY On Wednesday, October 10th, the Missionary Rally meeting of Port Perry United Church, was held in the Sunday School Room. In the Presi- dent's absence, Mrs. Geo. Davey oc- cupied the chair. After prayer by Mrs. Allen, and Seripture reading by Mrs. C, C. Jef- frey, the roll was called. Mrs. Geo. Jackson read two selec- tions helpful to Christian Stewardship in the broader sense, In the business session it was de- cided to hold the usual annual mis- sionary banquet on November 14th, and ta make it entirely a women's meeting, ' Mrs. Davey then ably reviewed the Study Chapter. A duet by Miss Marjory Pyatt and Miss Reta Willard, was enjoyed by all. A social half hour followed the meeting in which tea was served by the group in charge. BS THANK You! Perry Hospital, on Friday, October 19th, 1934, Port Perry's oldest busi- ness man--Mr. WW, A, Beatty, Mr. Beatty was born in West- minster Township, near London, some 94 years ago. He was the youngest of three children of Henry and Mary Acheson Beatty. After the death of Mr, Beatty, Sr. Mrs. Beatty moved to Prince Albért. There the late W. A. Beatty attended school, also the old school at Borelia for a short time, At an early age Mr. Beatty was ap- prenticed to the harness trade with the late Thomas Courtice, with whom he worked for a number of years. In the early 80's Mr. Beatty and the late James Bongard formed a partner- ship and carried on a harness shop in the building on the north side of Queen St., now occupied by the Ob- server Office. A few years later, Mr. Beatty moved to the B. F. Ackerman building where he carried on business until the time of his death, Deceased was active in sports in his younger days, cricket being his special hobby. His memory extended to very early days when Port Perry was nothing but a mill village, . In those days the Indians used to parade the streets in their blankets. Mr. Beatty's old home in Prince Albert was open house to the young Many a Sun- day evening was spent in hymn sing- ing. Mr. Beatty was interested in Sunday School work as a young man, being a teacher of a class of boys for some time, Mr, Beatty was a Mason of long standing, being a Past Master of Fidelity Lodge. He was buried with Masonic Honours. The funeral ser- vice was held at the United Church and was conducted by Rev. W. J. H. Smyth. Subscriptions will be payable on or before November 30th. The debentures will bear interest at 4%. Seven months interest will be paid on June 30th, 1936 and annually season's business. Mr. Stephens has been in the blacksmith business at Myrtle for almost two years, and he and Mrs. Stephens and their family are very highly respected citizens of our village and their many, friends re- gret to part with them. But our best wishes for a happy voyage go with them.
