The ladies of the Women's Mission- ary Society of the United Church held a banquet in the church on Wednesday evening. This is an annual and a goodly number turned out. Mitchell, Field Secretary, was the guest speaker. ~~ CHRISTMAS FAIR A meeting is called at 8 p.m. on Friday, November 16th, at the Star Office, to consider arrangements for the Christmas Fair. AP ---- -- ~~ La --_-- Eo THE YOUNG MEN'S BIBLE CLASS About fifty young men gathered in the auditorium of the United Church on Wednesday evening, November 1, to discuss plans for a young men's organization. It was decided to call the class the Young Men's Bible Class. Messrs. M. A. Gerrow, Robt. Harris and Storey Beare were appointed a nominating committee. When the nominations were brought in a vote was taken by all. The following officers were elected: Class Teacher--F. E. Reesor. Assistant Teacher--R. B. Smallman. Leader of Forum--Rev. W. J. H. Smyth. President--R. G. Gemmell. Vice-President--R. J. Harris. Secretary--Albert Cawker. Treasurer--Storey Beare. Pianist--Grant Kilpatrick. Reporter--Wm. Thos. Harris. In the matter of finances the class is independent to vote its funds as it sees fit, The question of Literature for Class Study will be decided at a more op- portune date. At the present time the class continues to use the Senior Men's Quarterly. Meetings will be held on Sunday from 1.45 to 245 pm. Twenty minutes will be devoted to the lesson, twenty minutes for business and twenty minutes for the forum. In the forum many interesting ques- tions and problems will be discussed before the class. If you have any particular question or problem we would be glad to have you present it. Every young man should enjoy these meetings where we have good educa- tion and good fellowship. The or< ganization plans additional meetings through the week and Sunday even- ings. Young fellows, come out next Sunday and hear what we have to say about the question: "If you were asked to sign a peti- tion that under no, condition would you go to war would you sign it?" If you can't come next Sunday, come when you can. - Come with a friend or bring a friend for you need us and we need you. ' Many of our people attended the chicken supper at Manchester last Friday, and report a good supper and programme. Miss Nellie Nash and Miss Harvey, of Oshawa, were Sunday guests of Mr, 'and Mrs. F. Briggs. Mr. Arthur Manderson attended the banquet of his Battalion in Toronto last Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Thompson, Mr. Albert Holmes and Mrs. Smith, all of Toronto, were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. E. Masters, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Sonley and! family of Whitby and Mrs. McCrea of | Toronto were Sunday guests of Mr, Wm. Martin. N 'Mr. and 'Mrs. Roy Scott and sons; Kenneth, Harold and Beverley, of Sea- grave, were visitors on Sunday of Mrs. Long and Mr. and Mrs. F. Harrison, Day services in Whitby and Brooklin. Mr. Robert Chisholm was a visitor to Toronto last Wednesday. Mr. Lorne Bryant, of Ashburn, has purchased the cattle sheds from the. C.P.R. here and is busy this week taking them down and moving them to his farm. It may be remembered that Mr. Bryant had the misfortune to have his barn burned last year. Mr. Martin and family. of Welcome and his sister Miss Martin, of Whitby Ladies' College, were callers at the parsonage on Sunday. Rev, Mr. Honey preached a splendid Remembrance Day sermon on Sunday, Reading the 46th Psalm and using for his text Isaiah 42:4--*"He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he hast set judgment in the earth, and the isles shall wait for His law." A pleasing duet was sung by two ladies of the choir, which was most appropriate. Messrs. Art Manderson, Roy Bright, | John Grant, M. On Tuesday evening the members of Fidelity Lodge entertained a large number of visiting brethren from Lindsay, Sunderland, Uxbridge, To- ronto, Preston, and Brussels. The members of Gothic Lodge, Lindsay, put on the degree work in a pleasing manner. Following the lodge meet- ing the members gathered in the ban- quet room. A number of toasts were proposed. and responded to, with W. Bro. Grant Gerrow, acting as toast- master. The guest speaker of the evening was Wm, H. Moore, M.P. of Dunbarton. ~~ NOTED EDUCATOR TO BE HEARD BY C.B.S. AUDIENCE, NOV. 30th. Dr. Edwin D. Starbuck, noted American educator, philosopher, and psychologist, will address the-WABC- Columbia network radio audience, on Friday, November 30th, from 10:30 to 10:45 a.m. His talk, entitled "Some New Techniques for Judging Litera- ture", will be presented under the auspices of the National Council of Teachers of English. At the present time, Dr. Starbuck holds the important posts of Professor of Psychology and Director of Char- acter Research at the University of Southern California. Previously he was employed in similar positions at Leland Stanford University, Vincennes University, and Earlham College. He is the author of several authoritative works of an educational' nature, in- cluding "The Psychology of Religion", "Moral Education in the Public Schools", "Fairy Tale, Myth, and Legend", and "Guide to Literature for Character Training". The question as to whether or not early poultry marketing could be done successfully in a large way by farmers, from a quality standpoint, has been definitely answered, the pro- ducers in these districts having Jorg! onstrated by planning ahead that crop of chickens from practically any district in Ontario can be produced and made ready for sale when: the market demands it. = The average weight of the pool pack has been 6 Ibs; per bird, with a number of boxes 'of Miilkfed A weights over 80 pounds.
