"Bentley's. Remember the Manchester Dance on December 19th at the Township Hall. ND AN INSTRUCTIVE ADDRESS Those who attended the illustrated lecture put on by the 1.O.D.E. on Fri- day night of last week in the United Church, were well pleased. The ad- dress and the pictures by Mr. Thomp- son of W. T. Gopeland & Sons, gave a 'very clear ideaof the manufacture of | china, The idea of the address is well ex- pressed in the following extract from a booklet--"A Plated Article": "The home beautiful began with pottery. Natural beauty always ex- isted; but it was the potter who first expressed man's appreciation of it by trying to give grace of form and| charm of color to the rude vessels used in the Home life of primitive days. The jars in which primeval man stored his grain for winter were moulded by his bare hands on a bould- er and rudely decorated and dried in the sun. It was not long, however, be- fore man discovered the magic power that fire has in transforming the soft clay into a hard substancé; the pot- ter's wheel was also the chief outcome of his experiment. Thus the kiln and the wheel were both' known to all ancient civilizations, and were the es- sential, factors. in the making of pot- tery from the earliest times to the present day." Mr. I. R. Bentley, who was intru- mental in bringing the Copeland rep- resentative to Port Perry, displays many beautiful specimens of the potter's art at his store. Mr. Peters appeared to ask that an allow- ance be made on account for repairs to wiring made necessary by fall of tree. An allowance of $10 was made. The request of the Bowling Club for extra spice, being part of the Library propefty, was not granted, as the Library Board did not consent. The petition of Mrs. Whitmore to be allowed exemption of all but school taxes on thie Port Perry Hospital was not granted owing to the lateness in the year of presentation of the petition. Mr. Wesley Boynton was appointed tax collector. In accordance with Governmental regulations it was decided that in future that where the Council has to pay for pneumo treatments the rate will be $3. at the home -of-the patient |: or $2 at the office of the doctor, plus 12% % drug hllowance. Stock (live stock) in this class is bound to go up--forty- five out Sunday. Our attendance is steadily on the increase. There are plenty of shares left for everyone who is interested and there is no preferred stock; no risk; large dividends. Each shareholder has a first mortgage on the class. The interest is cumulative, giving a large yield to all stock hold- ers. Our executive had a meeting last Thursday night, and it appears that they had some big ideas in their minds. Just what the inner circle propose has not yet been divulged, but you can guess they have some popular - activities planned for the future. I'll see what I can learn and let you know further. On Sunday the class was interested in the question of laymen taking a more active part in the church service. Rev. Mr. Smyth outlined the Oxford Group movement to the class. After discussion it was decided that one fault of the movement might be that it was individualistic rather than socialistic. The Group does reach a class not usually touched effectively by the church--the social and financial - leaders, and they need it. Till we meet again.
