The speaker for the occasioh was Mr. W. R. Strike of Bowmanville, whose address was much appreciated by the men. He took for his theme--the church; and dealt with the problems that con- front that organization, It should be remembered that every Christian act, whether it be done by fraternal so- cieties, service clubs, or by private in- dividuals, has been fostered by the church, the most active agency for good in the world. The day is past when fear is the deciding reason for joining the church. Christ's ideal life; willing- ness to serve humanity; and the op- portunity for public worship--these are some of the main reasons for church membership. MEN'S BANQUET SPEAKER The speaker at the Men's Banquet in the United Church on Monday, Nov. 18th, at 6.45 p.m. sharp, will be Rev. W. J. Johnston, Toronto. Mr. John- ston, is an Irishman from Belfast. He began his Canadian ministry in St. Lambert's, Montreal, and from there he was called to Toronto. He is said by some to be one of the best after-dinner speakers in Toronto, and the Class feels that they will be able to sustain the high standard of last year's banquet. The men of Port Perry and vicinity are offered a fine opportunity on Monday night. ---- EPP ee PORT PERRY UNITED CHURCH 11 a.m.--subject--*'The Coming of * Our Lord." 1.45 p.m.--Men's Class and Forum. 2.45 p.m.--Sunday School. 7 p.m.--Evening worship. - CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION 7 p.m.--Evening Service. : LUMBAGO RHEUMATISM, SCIATICA, LUMBAGO, quickly relieved by this new treatment-- RUMACAPS et et BAZAAR SALE OF USEFUL ARTICLES, SATURDAY, NOV. 16th. S. have put on a play at some time during the year. Each of them has been well presented, and has been of a quality that causes them to be remembered with pleasure, This year the play--"Whittlin"-- was staged by younger members of the school than those who formerly took part. They did their parts well and held the enthusiastic interest of the audience from start to finish. It would be difficult to pick out any particular characters as "stars". They were all "stars", and deserve commendation for the excellent pre- sentation made. "Whittlin" is a type of play well suited to teach the power of.simple Christian trust in a dramatic manner. 'That does not mean that it was lack- ing in humor, nor that it was dull in any sense; but it did show the value 'of kindness practised in the face of unusual difficulties.. The Cast of Characters Dr. Adam Good, the village doctor, William Willard Ruth Wilson, her Mother's Daughter, Mrs. 'Wilson, Ruth's Mother, Dave Patterson, the Village Crab, Owen Clift Jimmy Edwards, who has possibilities, Sidney Smallman "Gip" an old friend of Jimmy, Roger Oke Johnny Dee, a boy of the village, Ivan Dusty Miss Eunice Harris--Directress EE IE a SI "ITS A KNOCKOUT" Rehearsals are well under way for the snappy musical comedy "It's a Knockout", a John B. Rogers pro- duction, under the auspices of the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire. This play is to be pre- sented. in the Town Hall, Port Perry, 'Tuesday, November 19 and Wednes- day, November 20, at.8.16 p.m. The role of Pattie is in the capable hands of Marjorie Pyatt and her im- personality of the spunky little eleven-year-old orphan who sets out to "get her man" is already an as- sured success. young fellow who is the object of her determination has a busy. two hours before he finally works his way out of his many difficulties and discovers that Pattie is not only a mature young lady; but a very wealthy one. He is ably, if somewhat "slangily" assisted by his hard-boiled Spike Maloney (Grant Robertson) a "Moon Mullins" in the flesh if you ever saw one. Bob's sister Josie who is the author of Pattie's scheme is played by Dorothy Balfour; and Fred Bob's friend is played remarkably well by Sidney Smallman. You'll laugh your head off at Caleb (Grant Kilpatrick) the deaf but frisky old hoosier as well ag the two town gossips, Sarah (Mrs. H. Mulligan) and Maranda (Enid Wallace). Poor little Winnie who has such a time pronouncing her R's is played very well by Agnes Gooder- ham, while' Henry Randall, Bob's father, 'is portrayed by Mr. H. G. Hutcheson--Lord Beasley.: The pop- ular idea of. the slow thinking Briton is interpreted by Owen Cliff, and is a howl; while! Lyman Ross, the man who gave a party with dire results, is played by Bob Ewers. These people along with the peppy darfeers, composed of high school girls, combine to .give you a really good show. Don't migs it. * Dem. LEE TODD CONTINUES TO WIN. On Saturday last at the Dufferin Race Track, "Lee Todd" the roan won 8rd money in a string of eleven horses.
