In the ninth Harper, the Phil's third baseman, beat out a puny little hit to Dugan. Dugan was playing too deep and failed to nip Harper at the bag by an eyelash. The London Free Press writes: -- The Editorial Board of the Canadian Poetry magazine has done editors the world over a distinet favor by dealing with a question that is com- mon in the "experience of any executive who 'deals in verse. In the recent issue of the atractive and -| significant little ~ publiéation it answers tersely "yet completely the invariable and sometimes sarcastic '| query that comes from the contribu-. tor who has had 'several. efforts re- jected: "Am [ wasting my: time writing poetry?" Facea with an average of 200 contributions a week' for a publication that prints in the region of 30 poems every quarter, the board says: : A blanket answer is possible, No- one ever wastes time writing poetry for his own amusement, but writing and publishing poetry are very dif- ferent matters. Thus there is a good unpublished, and for the most part, unpublished poetry, That so many .should want to: write poetry is good; that they should all seek publication indicates: that they have very little idea of tne amount of craftsmanship necessary to produce a poem that can be read' with profit and pleasure by a large number 'of people. A poem can be written only by someone who knows how to write; there it no exception to that rule, Poetry 1s an exacting difficult craft, and it takes years of hard work, and education, and a sense of 'the language. Rhyme and: metre do not make a poem; they produce by themselves' nothing but doggerel. Our job is to print the best or the material submitted to us and merely publish some of the best poetry written in Canada. It is not our business to absorb the vast quantity of competent, but undis- tinguished verse that every locality produces. : No one who has ever experienced the thrill of writing: : "I look up in the sky so blue And all my thoughts just turn . to you" , can be unsympathetic towards those who, -under sudden inspiration, sud- denly "dash off" a number of stanzas. Creative art is heady wine, particularly if taken by a former teetotaler, and there are always loyal blossoming artist against Swinburne or Masefield. Frequently, however, these friends are not so much amazed at the high quality of the verse as they are over the fact that its creator really has demonstrated that he can intelligently make "sky" rhyme with "apple pie." = This is something to remember while trying ta, be kind to stupid and unappreci- ative editors. : Not So Difficult Woman _ Writer Points Out That Old Day of Oratory Has Passed In this day of feminism, almost every public spirited woman has a speech to make sooner or later.
