BENTLEY WE FIT WE REPAIR Glasses You Save Money = AT SOCIALLY Last Friday evening the members of the United Church spent a social evening together at the church. The main feature of the program was a descriptive address about the Eskimos, delivered by Rev. C. C. Harcourt ot Blackstock, Mr, Harcourt spent some years missionary and has an intimate ac- quaintance with these little known people of the far north. The mission at which Rev, Mr, and Mrs. Harcourt were stationed was 160 miles within the Arctic Circle. The cold was intense, as may be judged from the fact that during the winter they burned 68 cords of wood to heat their comparatively small buildings. Distances are tremendous, and pop- ulation is very. sparse. The. mission was also the post office, and served an area of 50,000 square miles. In the journey to that vast north a thousand miles seems to be but an item of passing interest. It must be a matter of adjustment for a white man to become used to the crude manner in which the Eski- mos live. If anyone would like to test his interest in carrying the Gos- pel to those people, a year of actual service would proyide ample test. The Eskimo has peculiar ideas as to food and sanitary habits, But they are a patient. people and give evidence of great skill in the arts that are essential to their lives, They make wonderful use of what the average white man would throw away The men of the Bible Class. are grateful' to Mr. Harcourt for his en- tertaining and instructive address. - ~~ i. At Beatly's Store, Port Perry PHONE 33 THE BIBLE CLASS MEETS OBITUARY WILLIAM 8. BRAUND Wiliam S. Braund, former Lindsay merchant, was found lying dead on the floor of his cottage at Pleasant Point by his son Herbert, of Toronto, on Sunday afternoon, Mr, Braund has not been in good health for at least two years and had been at his cottage for some time. His son Her- bert of the MacLean Publishing Co,, Toronto, came to visit his father on Sunday only to find the door locked and the cottage apparently deserted. He gained entrance by breaking a door down and found his aged father lying on the floor near the radio which was still turned on. It is believed that Mr. Braund had suffered from a heart attack and was probably dead a few days before dis- covery was made, No inquest will be held. ~ 4 Mr. Braund was 71 years of age, and was a former resident of this locality. A GARDEN OF ROMANCE To the Southeast Corner: Once up- on a timeA quarrelsome pear resolved to bérry past differences and try to live peaceably 'together. The wife was "some peach", and had a great fondness for being up-to-date in the currant fashions, and as her hubby had never received a plum or a slice of melon, he felt rather cherry about raisin the kale for such purposes, and asked her to kindly prune expenses as much as possible. When he received felt chilled to the very marrow, but a sight of the bonnet itself warmed him 'sufficiently to remark: "That's what I cauliflower that's bean gourd by an angry bull," At this she pro- ceeded to turnip her nose endive at worst she could do was to pepper him with peas and tread on his 'corn, call- ing him a cross between a cabbage- head and pumpkin; whatever that may be. This so nettled him that he turn- ed radish in the face and proceeded to squash her bopnet, but as she was too proud to let him know just what that meant to her she simply said: "I don't carrot all." When the news of their quarrel began to leek aut among the Murphys, the Logans, the Lawtons, and others of their set, it gave them a rather melon cholic feeling, and they said, "Lettuce make up." So they lived appley evér afterward. Koh! Rabi Okra. St. George, Brant County. i. A.
