<1 Ag Bchaefer Optical, 106 Yonge, ' Toronto, BN A i EEE Company Protects 'Aspirin' Trademark Judgment Obtained Against Par- the Product OTTAWA. -- The Bayer Company Limited having brought actions to re- 'strain infringements of its registered trade mark "Aspirin" the Exchequer Court of Canada has given judgment against its five defendants, In each case the Exchequer Court perpetually restrains the defendants Ivan Lam- bert, Joseph Nozick, Standard Bottlers and Packers Ltd.,, B. Neuman and Joe Beckman from using the trade mark "Aspirin" on preparations put out by themselves and awards the Bayer Company costs and damages. The defendants were marketing the infringing product under various names including Pioneer Sales Co., Western Sales Co., Western Distribut- ing Co., Advance Specialty Co. and Acme Specialty Company. The tab- lets. labelled "Aspirin" were not of Bayer manufacture and were packed in small envelopes, each containing three or four tablets, and mounted on cards, r It is the intention of The Bayer Company Limited to take every legal method to uphold its trade mark, "Aspirin" {8 the trade mark of The Bayer Company, Limited, Windsor, Ontario, The bus was crowded. People were going home for the holidays. The lights had 'gone out in the bus and the 'tall 'man asked the young lady who crowded on at the last stop if he could help her find a strap. Young Lady--I've already found one. 4 : Tall Man--Then, would' you mind letting go of my necktie? This one from the Wall Street - Journal strikes us as being funny: An Irishman had been thrown over a fence by an enraged bull. He had just recovered when he noticed the bull pawing. the ground and furiously tossing his head. "If it wasn't for your bowing and scraping," said Mike, "I'd think you threw me over on purpose." Often think the most praiseworthy human quality is the power of self restraint, . . . Takes much will _power to overcome habit or desire of 'any kind. . . . "He that overcom- eth," says Revelations," shall not be hurt in the second death," . . . "Overcome evil with gdod;" admon- ished St. Paul. . . , Not bad for Christmas thinking, what? 'The train with three drunks. aboard slowed "down for the stop at Wem- bley. Said the First--Is thish Wembley? | Second--No, it's Thursday. Third--So'm I. Lions' Club. The craft, which will accommodate 16 boys, is the second of a fleet of four which the Club plans to provide the British Columb'a Sea Scouts. The first was presented last spring. * * * Boy Scouts of distant points at- tending the year's International Scout Jamboree in Holland included 8 from Venezuela, 9"from- Siam, 12 from Ja- pan, 26 from China, 5 from Iran, 30 from Mexico and 30 from Iceland. * » * Unlike. many adult - hunters and _|. prospectors from jtime to time lost in the North. country, when Scout Louis Vollans, 16, accompanied by four younger boys, including 'one of five found he had lost his bearings in the heavy bush. near Wanless, north of Flin Flon, during a Satur- with a small rifle, he did not lose his head. When darkness shortly came on with a chilling wind,"he bivouacked for the night, kindled a fire for warmth and comfort, and grilled the partridge they had shot. The part- ridge he divided with care, giving the breast meat to the youngest boy. Thon. in preparation for daylight, he took direction from the North Star and set a stick pointing in the direc- tion that should bring them out on the railroad. Early in the morning they set off, and finally came out on the rails four miles from home. Meanwhile the alarmed searchers who had failed to find them the pre- vious afternoon and evening, were on ; Yhe point of summoning aid from Flin 'lon. A lookout on top of the station -water tank reported distant figures on the track. A section man sped away on a gas-car to investigate, and the lost quintet were soon safe back at home. But for Scout Vollans' coolness and head work the lads might have been lost for several days, if nothing more serious had resulted.: The partridge was the only food caten -since leav- ing home, and they. had been with- out water. The stout little five year old, when asked if he had not been terribly tired, replied, "Well, I was getting tired, but I could have gone two more miles." ; i il NATURAL MINERAL PHOSPHATE Nature's Non-Burning PLANT FOOD Fer Getter Pastures - Better Crops "and for Folder "R" to Room 709A, 177 West Wellington Street, Toronto. day afternoon hunting expedition is warm and cosy. the dustless; smokeless money-saving Coke for the furnace, range or heater Order from your local HAMCO dealer = he deserves your fuel business, ** + « « I never got such heat from my old furnace before + +. every. room in the house HAMCO is so easy to regulate, too = gives just the warmth we want--when we want it. Years Ago Says Ctelogizt Industrial hazards to hearing have been"recognized for years, but in most cases, Dr. C. C. Bunch writes in the magazine - Laryngoscope, "like Mark Twain and the weather, everybody talks about it, but nobody does any- thing." The otologist, member of the staff of Washington University's Oscar Johnson Institute in St. Louis, says that industrial America {is rapidly growing more and more noisy, the last thirty years having brought an enormous increase in noise-producing machiiery. * Unaware of Defects And, in all that bang and crash and roar, the ear is "taking it on the chin" he declares. Dr. Bunch recommended that the hearing of workers be tested before they are hired and at intervals in their employment, "The- insidious nature of the onset of permanent impairment of hearing produced by excessive noise is such," he writes, "that.those who are enm- ployed in these conditions are often unaware of any hearing defect." Rallroads Requise Tests Hearing tests in industry probably have not been established for two rea- sons, he asserts. The employer is in. clined to discourage such investiga. , tion because of the possibility of legal regulations, and the employee himself may oppose a hearing test for fear some handicap would be disclosed to endanger his job. There is one exception, Dr. Bunch says. Certain railroads require fre- quent examination of the hearing of employees who are responsible for the safety of the public. a Blew Selves Up To Save Friends Stories of Heroic Actions of Ree cent Years Thrill the World On August 1st last, the Japanese who had surrounded Peking were threatening to bombard the inner city with Its sixty-foot walls. 'Had they done so thousands of lives would have been lost. Into the breach stepped Major D. J. Cowan, Britfh Charge d"Affaires. The danger was extreme, for the first shot would have meant a hail of bul- lets in which no one could have lived. The major called on both sides to keep the peace, but neither side trust- ed the other. Major Cowan refused to be discburaged. He negotiated first with one side, then the other, until at last both agreed on peace. One Man Saves Thousands So one man, by braving death, saved thousands. ' This story brings to mind another from the East. In March, 1935, there were riots in the Indian city of Kar- achl. Troops had to fire, and a num- ber of Mohammedans were killed and wounded. The wounded were taken - to the Civil Hospital, -where,, a little later, a great crowd of excited Mos- lems gathered outside the gate, seck- ing news of the hurt. Woman Defies Mob An agitator was urging the crowd to rush the gate, when it opened, and out came a grey-haired lady] She was Mrs. Daisy Munro, the superintendent, Fearlessly she appealed to the mob, telling tliem they could not enter, and . asking them if they preferred to be held back by her or by armed police. The crowd remalned orderly, yet, had it not been for this lady's pluck, the police would have been forced to fire again, and many more lives lost. Equally fine was the exploit of some Russian sallors. In November, 1914, seven men were in a picket boat in the Gulf of Finland, when they saw one of their own large cruisers bear- ing down upon a floating mine, There 'was ro time left to warn the cruiser, 80 the steersman deliberately rushed Gas Still Lights Streets of Paris Gas still holds its own in lighting the streets of Paris. There are to- day 32,945 Parisian street lamps lit by gas, compared with 21,127 lit by electricity. Paris likes to be called the City of Light, a reputation won by the brilliant illuminations in the central boulevards. The annual street-light- | ing bill was, until recently, about six hundred thousand pounds, but it has soared up this "year in consequence of the two devaluations of the franc, Gas holds its own in London, too, where many famous streets are still lit by gas. Statistics show that gas and clectricity have an equal share -in lighting London streets. Bad Food War Cause The wars in Spain and the Far East may according to the chief of an American food company, be dug to bad food. "Bad food," he declares, "causes bad nerves, with consequent {ill-effect on the attitude of man to his fellow. men. No man ever got up from a good meal without, feelings of tolerance to. wards his neighbour,"
